Central Park Walking Plans: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Central Park Walking Plans: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Hi walkers,
It’s a music-rich weekend — a lakeside guitar man, tango under the Shakespeare statue, folk dancing at King Jagiello — before a heat wave settles in and turns the week into a morning-only affair. Two housekeeping notes shape your routes: Bethesda Terrace is closed all week, and Saturday morning brings a big race to the lower loop.
Weather this week
Storms Friday and showers Saturday in the low-80s, then a clear heat wave Sunday through Thursday building to 95° by Wednesday. Walk early and shady the whole back half of the week — the Ramble, North Woods, the Bridle Path, and the Reservoir hold cool longest, while the exposed Mall and Great Lawn are brutal by midday.
Fri Jul 10 — Movie Night on the Great Lawn, storms permitting
An open, quiet park during the day between storm cells — good for a shaded Ramble or North Woods wander. In the evening the Great Lawn hosts a free Movie Night at 8 PM; pleasant to stroll past if the sky holds, though afternoon thunderstorms may have the last word.
Sat Jul 11 — guitar at Hernshead, tango at the Shakespeare statue
A lovely on-route music day. That Guitar Man from Central Park plays Hernshead (on the Lake’s west shore) at noon, and at 6 PM there’s tango by the Shakespeare statue on Literary Walk — both worth timing a walk around. One crowd heads-up: the 9/11 Memorial 4-Mile race fills the lower loop and West Drive in the 60s–70s from 7:30 to about 10 AM, so start your morning walk up north or on the Bridle Path and drift down after. Note Bethesda Terrace is closed — admire Bow Bridge and the Lake from Cherry Hill instead.
Sun Jul 12 — folk dancing at King Jagiello, festivals at the Meer and Bandshell
The Central Park International Folkdancers gather at King Jagiello Plaza (by Turtle Pond) at 11 AM — a charming free stop. Up north, Summer on the Harlem Meer runs family programming at the Dana Discovery Center, and the Disability Unite Music and Arts Festival fills Bandshell Plaza from 11 AM (skip the Mall if you want quiet). First hot, sunny day at 85° — walk before noon.
Mon Jul 13 — 86°, early-and-shady
No events to time around; a morning stroll in the shade is the move. Conservatory Garden (north end) and the Ramble stay coolest. Bethesda Terrace remains closed.
Tue Jul 14 — 91°, morning only
Hot and exposed by midday. Keep to tree cover — North Woods, the Ravine, the Bridle Path — and be off the open lawns before 11.
Wed Jul 15 — 95°, the hottest day; dawn walks only
Peak heat. A first-light loop of the Reservoir or a shaded Ramble wander, then retreat indoors. Carry water and don’t linger on the Mall.
Thu Jul 16 — 92°, still a morning park
A notch cooler but the same advice: early, shaded, hydrated. A quiet way to end the week before the weekend crowds return.
