The Magic Raven at the Bandshell — Central Park Stage: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16

Hi theater fans,

A lean but real week for stage work: The Magic Raven Theater Company plays the Bandshell on Tuesday, and there’s a tango-and-Shakespeare-statue evening on Literary Walk Saturday. The Delacorte remains dark this summer, so the outdoor drama is coming from the pop-up companies.

Weather this week

Storms Friday and showers Saturday in the low-80s, then a clear, hot heat wave Sunday through Thursday to a 95° peak Wednesday. Both staged evenings this week (Saturday’s tango and Tuesday’s Bandshell show) should play dry — carry water for the warm nights, and know Friday’s storms are the week’s only real rain threat to an outdoor performance.

Sat Jul 11, 6 PM — Tango at the Shakespeare statue

An open-air movement-and-music evening on Literary Walk, staged at the Shakespeare statue at 6 PM — tango under the Bard, tagged theater and performance as much as music. A lovely, low-key bit of outdoor stagecraft to start the week. Showers are possible earlier in the day but should clear by evening.

Sun Jul 12 — no scheduled stage work

Quiet on the theater calendar. If you want performance, the day’s energy is musical — a Bastille Day concert at SummerStage and a festival at the Bandshell — but nothing staged in the theatrical sense.

Mon Jul 13 — dark

Nothing on the boards. A rest night before Tuesday’s show.

Tue Jul 14, 6 PM — The Magic Raven Theater Company at the Bandshell

The week’s headline: The Magic Raven Theater Company presents its program at Bandshell Plaza from 6 PM — the one proper company performance of the week, in the park’s classic open-air performance space. It’s 91° and clear, so a warm but comfortable evening under the plane trees. Get there early for a good spot on the plaza.

Wed Jul 15 & Thu Jul 16 — heat, and music not theater

No staged theater. Both evenings offer free SummerStage-style concerts (Morocco Wednesday, Great Lawn Thursday) if you want to be in the park, but nothing on the drama calendar. Peak heat Wednesday at 95°.

Looking ahead

Still no Shakespeare in the Park configured at the Delacorte for this summer — when a season is announced, it’ll lead this email. For now the pop-ups (Magic Raven, and the barefoot/statue-side companies) are the outdoor stage.
