Central Park Sports This Week: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Hey sports fans,
Two race mornings anchor the week — NYRR’s 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile Saturday and CRCA crit racing Sunday — plus the little sailboats on Conservatory Water and a full summer slate of league ball. The heat wave building Sunday to a 95° Wednesday peak is the story on the fields: expect thinner afternoon rosters as the week goes on.
Weather this week
Storms Friday and showers Saturday in the low-80s, then a hot, sunny heat wave Sunday through Thursday to a 95° peak Wednesday. Morning games play fine all week; afternoon field play (and the players) will wilt from Tuesday on, and the Bowling Green closes for maintenance Tuesday.
Sat Jul 11, 7:30 AM — 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile
The week’s marquee competition: about 5,000 NYRR runners race four miles on the lower loop, staging on West Drive in the 60s–70s, starting 7:30 AM and clearing by roughly 10. Great morning to spectate at the West 60s–70s. Also Saturday, Model Yacht Racing runs on Conservatory Water at Kerbs Boathouse from 9 AM — the radio-controlled sloop fleet, a quietly competitive Central Park classic.
Sun Jul 12, 5:30–7:30 AM — CRCA Central Park Racing Series
The club’s crit racing series takes East Drive from 5:30 to 7:30 AM — fast pack racing on the park’s east side at dawn. If you’re up early, it’s the best free bike racing in Manhattan. First hot, sunny day at 85°, so the fields fill early and empty by afternoon.
League ball: full summer volume
The permitted fields are packed — roughly 40 to 57 games a day across softball, baseball, kickball, and soccer at North Meadow, Heckscher Fields, the Great Lawn, and the East 102nd Street Clay Oval. Saturday and Sunday are the busiest (41 and 57 permits). Youth Little League and the CP Sports summer program run South Dead Road and the Clay Oval on weekdays. It’s a normal heavy-summer schedule — the only variable is heat, which will thin the Tuesday–Thursday afternoon divisions.
Midweek notes
- Gottesman Pool lap swim runs daily at 7 AM (free) up at the Harlem Meer — the coolest workout in the park this week.
- Bowling Green Lawn is closed for maintenance Tuesday, all day — no lawn bowling that day.
- Tue–Thu (91–95°): peak heat. Morning games only is the smart call; hydrate hard and watch for early cancellations on the afternoon slates.
