Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Hey runners,
Two things own your week: Saturday morning the loop belongs to NYRR’s 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile — about 5,000 runners on the lower loop from 7:30 AM — and then a heat wave that builds all week and peaks at 95° Wednesday. Front-load in the cooler, storm-flecked Friday–Saturday air, then go dawn-only from Sunday on.
Weather this week
Showers and thunderstorms Friday and scattered rain Saturday in the low-to-mid 80s, then a clear, relentless heat wave Sunday through Thursday climbing 85° → 91° → 95° at Wednesday’s peak. Run the dry windows Friday–Saturday, then treat every day after as first-light-only — out by 6, short, and carry water.
Fri Jul 10 — 88° and thundery, open loop between storms
No closures on any drive, so the loop, Reservoir, and Bridle Path are all yours — the only obstacle is the radar. Storms fire up in the afternoon and evening, so bank your run early or catch a dry gap and bail when it lights up.
Sat Jul 11, 7:30 AM — 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile takes the lower loop
This is the day to plan around. About 5,000 runners stage on West Drive in the 60s–70s and race four miles on the lower loop starting 7:30 AM; the field clears by roughly 9:30–10 AM. The loop is a race course, not your training loop, until then — this is not a “clean Saturday.” Run before 7 AM, after 10, or take the Bridle Path or the Reservoir track while it’s busy. Scattered showers, low 80s, so it won’t be a hot one.
Sun Jul 12, 5:30–7:30 AM — CRCA crit racing on East Drive
The CRCA Central Park Racing Series runs its early-morning laps on East Drive from 5:30 to 7:30 AM — a fast peloton sharing the road with you. Not a closure, but if you’re out at dawn, expect race bikes at speed on the east side; run counterclockwise-aware or start after 7:30. First clear day of the stretch at 85°, so otherwise it’s a good — if warm — morning.
Mon Jul 13 — 86°, open loop, go early
Nothing on the drives. Warm and sunny, so get your miles in before 8 and keep them honest. The Reservoir and Bridle Path stay shaded longest.
Tue Jul 14 — 91°, dawn only
Hot and fully open. First-light run or nothing; this is a day to shorten up and slow down. Hydrate before, during, and after.
Wed Jul 15 — 95°, hottest day of the week
The peak. Dawn or treadmill — there’s no smart way to run the loop in mid-afternoon at 95°. If you must, go absolute first light, keep it very short, and stay near a water fountain.
Thu Jul 16 — 92°, still brutal, early or bust
Marginally cooler but still dangerous by midday. Same playbook: out at dawn, short, hydrated. Open loop all day.
Quick recap
- Sat 7:30 AM — 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile. Lower loop is a race course until ~10 AM; run before 7, after 10, or use the Bridle Path / Reservoir.

- Heat wave Sun–Thu, peaking 95° Wednesday. Every day is dawn-only from Sunday on.
- Fri–Sat are your cool windows — storm-dodging Friday, wet-but-mild Saturday between race hours.
