Central Park Music & Performance: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Central Park Music & Performance: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Hi music fans,
This is the loaded week of the summer so far: three SummerStage nights in a row at Rumsey Playfield — Nora En Pure’s PURIFIED Friday, Brazilian star Pedro Sampaio Saturday, and a free Bastille Day bill Sunday — plus a Sunday festival at the Bandshell, a midweek Moroccan SummerStage, and a free Great Lawn concert to close. Most of it free.
Weather this week
Storms Friday and showers Saturday in the low-80s, then clear and hot Sunday through Thursday, peaking at 95° Wednesday. The outdoor shows should play through — carry water for the evening sets, and know that Friday’s storms are the only real threat to a lineup this week.
Fri Jul 10, 4 PM — Nora En Pure presents PURIFIED (SummerStage benefit)
Swiss producer Nora En Pure brings her melodic deep-house PURIFIED series to Rumsey Playfield as a SummerStage benefit show, running from 4 PM into the evening. It’s a ticketed benefit rather than a free night, but it’s the marquee opener. Watch the radar — afternoon thunderstorms are the wild card.
Sat Jul 11, 4 PM — Pedro Sampaio (free SummerStage)
A high-energy Brazilian afternoon: Pedro Sampaio, one of the biggest names in funk carioca, headlines a free SummerStage show at Rumsey Playfield from 4 PM. Free means arrive early — the popular ones reach capacity. Earlier, catch That Guitar Man from Central Park at Hernshead (noon) and tango at the Shakespeare statue on Literary Walk (6 PM) for an all-day music crawl.
Sun Jul 12 — Bastille Day at SummerStage + folk dancing + a festival
The day’s centerpiece is a free Bastille Day Concert at Rumsey Playfield (6 PM), headlined by Black M and Laurent Voulzy — a celebration of French and Francophone music. Before that, the Central Park International Folkdancers meet at King Jagiello Plaza at 11 AM, and the Disability Unite Music and Arts Festival fills Bandshell Plaza from 11 AM for Disability Pride Month. A full, free day.
Mon Jul 13 — quiet on the music calendar
No shows on the books. A good evening to walk the empty Bandshell or Bethesda area (Terrace itself is closed this week) and let the ears rest before Wednesday.
Tue Jul 14, 6 PM — The Magic Raven Theater Company at the Bandshell
A theatrical-musical evening at Bandshell Plaza from 6 PM — the Magic Raven company’s staged program is the one midweek performance to catch. It’s 91° and clear, so a warm but playable night.
Wed Jul 15, 6 PM — Morocco: From Dakhla to Casablanca (free SummerStage)
A free SummerStage world-music night at Rumsey Playfield — Hoba Hoba Spirit, Hamid El Kasri, and more, spanning Moroccan traditions from Dakhla to Casablanca. It’s the hottest day of the week at 95°, so hydrate through the set; the music’s worth the swelter.
Thu Jul 16, 7 PM — Free Concerts on the Great Lawn
The week closes with a free evening concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM — bring a blanket. Still 92° and clear, an easy warm-night listen.
Looking ahead: Naumburg Orchestral Concerts resume their Tuesday season at the Bandshell on July 21 (Orchestra of St. Luke’s) — mark it.
