Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Fri Jul 10 – Thu Jul 16
Hey cyclists,
Two loop events bracket your weekend: Saturday morning NYRR’s 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile hands the lower loop to ~5,000 runners from 7:30 AM, and Sunday dawn the CRCA Central Park Racing Series takes East Drive for crit laps. After that it’s a heat wave — dry, fast roads but punishing by midday, peaking 95° Wednesday.
Weather this week
Wet Friday and Saturday — thunderstorms then rain showers — leave the descents greasy, then a dry, building heat wave Sunday through Thursday from 85° up to 95° at Wednesday’s peak. Ride the traction cautiously through the weekend, then go early-morning-only from Sunday on and carry more water than feels necessary.
Fri Jul 10 — 88°, storms in the afternoon
Drives are open, but the pavement turns slick when the storms roll through in the afternoon and evening — ease off the Harlem Hill descent and the 72nd Street cut-throughs on wet asphalt. Morning is your driest, safest window.
Sat Jul 11, 7:30 AM — 9/11 Memorial 4-Mile owns the lower loop
Roughly 5,000 runners stage on West Drive in the 60s–70s and race the lower loop from 7:30 AM until it clears around 9:30–10 AM. Not a hard closure, but the lower loop is effectively unrideable at speed during the race, with heavy pedestrian and spectator crowding at the West 60s–70s. Ride the full loop before 7 AM, or stay to the north end (102nd Street Cross Drive and up) until mid-morning. Wet and low-80s, so watch your line.
Sun Jul 12, 5:30–7:30 AM — CRCA crit racing on East Drive
The club racing series runs fast laps on East Drive from 5:30 to 7:30 AM. If you’re racing, you know the drill; if you’re not, either jump in behind or keep clear of the east side until 7:30 — a moving pack at crit speed is not the morning to squeeze past on the inside. First dry day at 85°, so a great — if warm — morning once the pack clears.
Mon Jul 13 — 86°, open drives, ride early
Clean loop, no events. Warm and sunny; get your laps in before the sun gets high and hydrate on every lap.
Tue Jul 14 — 91°, early-morning only
Fully open and hot. Dawn ride or an indoor trainer — midday laps at 91° with no shade on the drives are a bad trade. Bottles full.
Wed Jul 15 — 95°, the peak
Hottest day of the week. Ride at first light and keep it short, or skip it. Radiant heat off the asphalt makes the drives feel hotter than the number.
Thu Jul 16 — 92°, still an early-only day
A hair cooler but no relief by midday. Open loop, same plan: dawn, short, over-hydrated.
