Central Park Walking Plans: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Central Park Walking Plans: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Hi walkers,
Two things to build your walks around this week: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain are closed the entire week, so route your Bethesda-and-Bow-Bridge loop to admire the fountain from the upper terrace and linger elsewhere; and Tuesday brings a free classical concert to the Naumburg Bandshell that’s worth timing an evening stroll around. The front half is cool and rainy — lovely, quiet walking between cells — before real heat arrives Thursday.
Weather this week
Showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday in the mid-70s (the park is at its greenest and emptiest between showers), clearing Wednesday, then heat building to the low 90s Thursday and Friday and an upper-80s, storm-flecked weekend. Walk the cool, damp Mon–Wed mornings freely, and on the hot back half stick to shade — the Ramble, the Mall’s elms, the North Woods — and go early before the afternoon sun and storm cells.
All week — Bethesda Terrace closed
The park’s signature meeting place is fenced for the week. You can still take in the fountain and the lake from the upper terrace and Bethesda Arcade’s edges, but the lower terrace itself is off-limits — a good week to give Bow Bridge, Cherry Hill, and the Wagner Cove rustic shelter the attention they usually lose to the fountain crowds.
Tue Jul 7, 7:30 PM — Delirium Musicum at the Naumburg Bandshell (free)
Time an evening walk down the Mall to end at the Bandshell: Delirium Musicum plays the free Naumburg Orchestral Concerts series at 7:30 PM, the oldest free outdoor classical series in the country. Bring something to sit on; storms tend to clear by curtain, but glance at the radar before you set out.
Wed Jul 8 – Thu Jul 9 — the clear, warm middle
Wednesday is the week’s best all-around walking day — dry, comfortable, everything open (bar Bethesda). Thursday warms to 89°, so front-load it: the Conservatory Garden and the Ramble hold their cool longest in the morning. Note the Columbus Circle Food Market sets up at Merchants’ Gate (Thu–Sat) if you want to fold a bite into a southwest-corner walk — or steer around the crowd if you don’t.
Sat Jul 11 — a runners’ morning on the lower loop; a full day elsewhere
Quick heads-up only: a 4-mile race brings ~5,000 runners to the lower loop from 7:30 to about 9:30 AM, so save the West 60s–70s and the lower drives for later morning and start your walk up north or around the Reservoir. The rest of Saturday is rich for wandering — storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue (10 AM–1 PM), model sailboats on Conservatory Water, and “That Guitar Man From Central Park” busking at Hernshead on the Lake (noon–6 PM), a lovely place to pause.
Sun Jul 12 — folk music by Turtle Pond
A gentle close: the Central Park International Folkdancers hold their weekly open-air gathering at King Jagiello Plaza by Turtle Pond from 11 AM — live folk music and dancing you can happily watch from a bench. It’s 87° and humid, so keep to the shaded Belvedere-and-Ramble side and go before the afternoon storm chance.
Quick recap
All week — Bethesda Terrace & Fountain closed: admire from the upper terrace; give Bow Bridge and Cherry Hill the time instead.

Mon–Wed — cool and showery: the quietest, greenest walking; Wednesday is the pick of the week.
