Central Park Stage Notes: Delirium Musicum at Naumburg — Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Hi theater fans,
A quiet week for the park’s stages — no Shakespeare on the Delacorte calendar yet — so the live performance to catch is Delirium Musicum at the Naumburg Bandshell Tuesday, a string collective that plays with real theatrical drama, plus a tango at the Shakespeare statue Saturday evening.
Weather this week
Thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday in the mid-70s, clearing Wednesday, then hot into the low 90s Thursday and Friday and storm-flecked upper-80s over the weekend. Tuesday’s Bandshell concert is the only outdoor show with a rain question — these performances rarely scrub and storms tend to clear by curtain, but glance at the radar before you go.
Tue Jul 7, 7:30 PM — Delirium Musicum at the Naumburg Bandshell (free)
The week’s marquee performance: Delirium Musicum takes the Bandshell on the Mall at 7:30 PM as part of the free Naumburg Orchestral Concerts series. This is an LA string collective known for programmatic, dramatically staged sets — closer to a theatrical event than a straight recital, and exactly the kind of programming this series does best. Bring a blanket and arrive early.
Sat Jul 11, 6 PM — Tango at the Shakespeare statue
A small, lovely bit of park performance: social tango at the Shakespeare statue on Literary Walk, 6–7 PM — dancers taking over the Mall’s south end beneath the Bard himself as the evening cools. Worth a stop if you’re near Literary Walk; it’s 87°, so the shaded elm allée is the place to be.
Sat Jul 11, noon–6 PM — That Guitar Man From Central Park at Hernshead
For a performance-in-the-landscape afternoon, “That Guitar Man From Central Park” plays his long-running set at Hernshead on the Lake, noon–6 PM — a scenic, informal bit of live music theater on the water.
On the horizon
No Shakespeare in the Park run is posted for the Delacorte in the current calendar — when the Public Theater announces its dates, this brief will lead with them. Until then, the Bandshell and the park’s informal performers carry the stage.
