Central Park Family Plans: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Central Park Family Plans: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Hi families,
A great weekend is coming: Movie Night on the Great Lawn Friday, plus a Saturday stacked with model sailboats, storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue, and a costumed-knights spectacle, and a Ranger nature-games afternoon Sunday. The catch is the heat — it builds all week — so the pool and the shade matter.
Weather this week
Rainy and mild Monday and Tuesday (mid-70s), clearing Wednesday, then hot — low 90s Thursday and Friday and upper 80s with afternoon storm chances over the weekend. Save the outdoor plans for mornings and evenings on the hot days, keep water and hats handy, and treat the free Harlem Meer pool as your midweek release valve.
All week — free swimming and Learn-to-Swim at Gottesman Pool
The Gottesman Pool at Harlem Meer runs free lap swim 7–8:30 AM daily, and — the family highlight — free Parent & Tots and Children’s Learn-to-Swim sessions Tuesday and Thursday (parent-and-tots at 10 and 11 AM, kids’ levels at 1 PM). A perfect way to spend a hot midweek morning; get there early on the 90° days.
Fri Jul 10, 8 PM — Movie Night on the Great Lawn
Pack a blanket and an early picnic: free outdoor Movie Night on the Great Lawn at 8 PM, once the day’s 91° heat finally eases after sundown. Arrive before dark to claim a patch of lawn.
Sat Jul 11 — model boats, storytelling, and knights
The big family day, best enjoyed in the morning before the heat:
- Model Yacht Racing on Conservatory Water (Kerbs Boathouse), 9 AM–3 PM — the radio-controlled sailboat fleet the kids love to watch.
- Storytelling in Central Park at the Hans Christian Andersen statue, 10 AM–1 PM — the beloved summer storytelling tradition by the Model Boat Pond.
- “Santa’s Knights and Gladiators NYC” on the Lawn Behind the Met, noon–4 PM — costumed foam-sword combat that’s a hoot to watch.
- Heads-up: a 4-mile race brings runners to the lower loop first thing (7:30–9:30 AM), so enter from the north or east if you’re heading to Conservatory Water early.
Sun Jul 12, 1 PM — Ranger Nature World Cup Games
The Urban Park Rangers run their free Nature World Cup Games at the Great Hill (and from Strangers’ Gate), 1–2:30 PM — nature-themed team games for kids. It’s 87°, so bring water and shade breaks, and go for the morning at the playgrounds first.
