Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Mon Jul 6 – Sun Jul 12
Hey cyclists,
One thing owns your Saturday morning: the 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile hands the lower loop to ~5,000 runners from 7:30 AM, so plan your long ride for any morning but that one. The rest of the week the drives are open — it’s the weather, not the calendar, that shapes your windows.
Weather this week
Showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday in the mid-70s, clearing Wednesday, then heat climbing to 89–91° Thursday and Friday and an upper-80s, storm-flecked weekend. Rain-slick descents off Harlem Hill and around the bottom of the loop are the Mon–Tue hazard; midweek is your clean, cool riding, and by Thursday you’ll want an early roll before the heat and the afternoon cells build.
Mon Jul 6 & Tue Jul 7 — wet drives, ride the dry windows
Open loop both days, but thunderstorms make the surface the issue, not traffic. If you go, take the early-morning or late-evening dry gaps and ease off on the West Drive descent and the Center Drive apron where they stay greasy after a cell passes.
Wed Jul 8 — clearing at 82°, best riding day
The week’s prize: partly sunny, comfortable, drives fully open. Evening brings the free Spoon SummerStage show to Rumsey Playfield — spectators build around Center Drive and the W 72nd cut from late afternoon, so if you’re doing evening laps, expect walkers stepping onto the road near there and give the 72nd Street crossing extra room.
Thu Jul 9 — 89°, roll early
Hot and mostly sunny; get your laps in before the heat tops out. Open loop. The Shaggy show at Rumsey (7 PM) again pushes pedestrian traffic toward the 72nd Street crossing in the evening — the usual concert-night caution through the mid-park pinch.
Fri Jul 10 — 91°, early or indoor-trainer day
The hottest day of the week. The drives are open, but this is a dawn ride or a rest day — heat plus an afternoon thunderstorm chance makes midday laps a bad trade.
Sat Jul 11, 7:30 AM — race owns the lower loop
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile stages on West Drive in the W 60s–70s and races the loop from 7:30 AM; the lower loop is a runner-and-spectator zone until the field clears around 9:30. Don’t try to thread laps through it — ride the north end above the 102nd Street Transverse early, or start your loops after 9:30 once the course reopens. It’s 87° with a later storm chance, so early still wins.
Sun Jul 12 — 87°, open loop, hot
Course is gone, drives are back to normal, and the loop is yours — but the heat and afternoon storms aren’t. Grab an early ride and skip the baking midday hours.
