Central Park Walking Plans: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9
Hi walkers,
This is a week to walk by the thermometer. The front half is a dangerous heat wave — early mornings and shade only — and the back half turns cool, green, and rainy, which is honestly lovely walking weather if you carry an umbrella. Two things to plan around: Bethesda Terrace is closed all week, and there’s free music worth timing a stroll around midweek.
Weather this week
100° today and 96° on the Fourth mean pre-9-AM-or-shade walking through Saturday, then Sunday breaks into a cooler, showery stretch (upper 70s to mid-80s) that runs through Wednesday. The heat half wants the shaded North Woods, the Ramble, and Reservoir tree line at dawn; the wet half is soft-light, empty-path walking — bring rain gear and you’ll have Bow Bridge to yourself.
Fri Jul 3 & Sat Jul 4 — heat wave, walk early and shaded
Keep it to the cool of the morning and stick to canopy: the Ramble, North Woods, the Bridle Path under the trees, the Reservoir’s west side. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain are closed this week — a marquee stop off the list, so route Bow Bridge → Cherry Hill → the Lake shore instead. The Fourth brings holiday picnic crowds to Cherry Hill and the Great Lawn edges from late morning; wander the quieter north end if you want space.
Sun Jul 5 — Folkdancers at King Jagiello, heat easing
At 11 AM the Central Park International Folkdancers gather at King Jagiello Plaza (by Turtle Pond, east of Belvedere) — a free, cheerful circle worth pausing for on a Belvedere-and-Ramble loop. Cooler at 85° with a chance of showers. Note the SW corner (Columbus Circle / Merchants’ Gate) is congested with FIFA World Cup buses from 6 AM if you enter there.
Tue Jul 7 — Delirium Musicum at Naumburg, 7:30 PM (free)
The evening’s the reward this day: Delirium Musicum plays the Naumburg Bandshell at 7:30 PM, free — the historic summer classical series on the Mall, and a perfect destination for a cool-of-the-evening stroll up the Literary Walk. Storms are possible earlier, but they tend to clear by concert time; bring a blanket. (The day is cool and wet otherwise — 80° with showers — ideal for a quiet Conservatory Garden visit.)
Mon Jul 6 – Thu Jul 9 — soft, green, uncrowded walking
The cool showery stretch is the sleeper of the week: empty paths, glossy foliage, beautiful light between cells. Monday and Tuesday are the wettest, so pack an umbrella and enjoy having the Ramble and North Woods to yourself. The Pond lawn (Mon) and Bowling Greens (Tue) are fenced for maintenance — minor, just don’t plan a sit-down there. By Thursday it’s back to summery 88° and the free Shaggy show fills Rumsey in the evening if you want livelier company.
