Central Park Sports This Week: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9

Hey sports fans,

Holiday-week league play is thinner than usual and the heat will thin it further, but the diamonds are busy once the weather turns. A few field closures to know about, plus a new one worth flagging: free swim is open at the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center.

Weather this week

100° today and 96° on the Fourth make midday play a real heat risk — expect softball forfeits and short benches Friday–Saturday — before it cools into a wet, storm-interrupted stretch Monday through Wednesday. Morning and early-evening slots are your friend all week; rain, not heat, is what shortens games after Sunday.

Softball & youth ball — the daily roll-up

The permit diamonds at Heckscher, North Meadow, and the Great Lawn edges carry the usual summer softball and t-ball load every day this week — a few dozen games across the weekend, plus scattered soccer and kickball. Nothing tournament-scale on the calendar; the heat Friday–Saturday and storms Monday–Tuesday will do more to the schedule than any permit conflict. The East 102nd Street Clay Oval has a July session opening Thursday (Jul 9).

Field closures & maintenance

• East Meadow — closed Sat Jul 4 & Sun Jul 5, then a maintenance closure again Thu Jul 9. Plan pickup elsewhere.
• The Pond lawn — maintenance, Mon Jul 6.
• Bowling Greens — maintenance, Tue Jul 7 (the lawn-bowling greens offline for the day).

Model Yacht Racing — Sat Jul 4, 9 AM, Conservatory Water

The model-yacht fleet races at Kerbs Boathouse on Conservatory Water at 9 AM on the Fourth — a classic, low-key holiday-morning spectator sport before the heat peaks.

New: free swim at Gottesman Pool (Davis Center)

The Gottesman Pool at the new Davis Center (Harlem Meer) is running free lap swim at 7 AM most mornings this week, with parent-and-tot and learn-to-swim sessions added Thursday. In a 100° week, the best “sport” in the park might be an early lap swim — first come, first served.
