Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9
Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9
Hey runners,
No races and no charity walks touch the loop this week — every drive is open all seven mornings. The obstacle isn’t the calendar, it’s the sky: a dangerous heat wave crests today and tomorrow, then the whole week turns wet. One thing on your radar for next Saturday, though — see the bottom.
Weather this week
A brutal 100° today and 96° on the Fourth — heat-illness territory, not push-through weather — then it breaks Sunday into a cooler but soaking stretch of showers and thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday (upper 70s to low 80s). Run at dawn Friday and Saturday and skip the afternoons entirely; from Sunday on the temperature is your friend but you’ll be dodging storm cells, so watch the radar and go when it’s dry.
Fri Jul 3 & Sat Jul 4 — 100° then 96°, dawn only
Back-to-back scorchers. The loop is completely open both mornings, but this is first-light-or-nothing running: be done before 8 AM while it’s still in the 70s–80s, keep it short, hydrate hard. The heat is severe enough that SummerStage cancelled tonight’s Rumsey show — take the hint and stay off the drives after mid-morning. The Fourth adds holiday picnic crowds building from late morning and afternoon thunderstorms; get your miles in at sunrise before both the heat and the people arrive.
Sun Jul 5 — heat breaks, FIFA buses at the SW corner
Down to 85° and far more runnable, with only a chance of showers. The loop is yours — but FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle from 6 AM, so Merchants’ Gate (the SW entrance) will be clogged with buses and foot traffic early. If you normally start there, drop in at W 72nd or run the Reservoir instead.
Mon Jul 6 – Wed Jul 8 — cool and wet, best running of the week
This is the stretch to bank mileage — upper 70s to low 80s, no closures on the drives. The only asterisk is thunderstorms: Monday and Tuesday are genuinely stormy, so treat the radar as your workout partner and grab the dry windows (often early morning and late evening). The Pond lawn and Bowling Greens are closed for maintenance Mon/Tue, but neither touches your route.
Thu Jul 9 — 88° and drying out
Warming back up but manageable if you go early. Open loop, mostly sunny. Evening brings the free Shaggy SummerStage show to Rumsey (7 PM) — minor foot traffic near the 72nd Street entrance around then, nothing that blocks the drive.
Quick recap
No races or loop closures all week — the drives are open every morning.
Fri & Sat — heat wave (100°/96°): dawn runs only, kept short; afternoons are out.
Sun, from 6 AM — FIFA buses at Columbus Circle: enter at W 72nd or the Reservoir, not Merchants’ Gate.
Mon–Wed — cool and wet: the best running window of the week; dodge the thunderstorms.
Next Sat Jul 11 — NYRR 9/11 Memorial & Museum 4-Mile in Central Park (~5,000 runners). Not this week, but if you’re not racing it, expect the lower loop staging and closed early that morning. Register at nyrr.org if you want in.
