Central Park Family Plans: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9
Hi families,
The big family news this week is a cool one — literally. Free swim is open at the Gottesman Pool at the new Davis Center, which is exactly what a 100° holiday weekend calls for. Plan the front half around water and shade, and the back half around the cooler, rainy-but-fun stretch that follows.
Weather this week
A dangerous 100° today and 96° on the Fourth mean pool, shade, and early mornings only for little kids through Saturday, before it cools into a showery, storm-dotted week (upper 70s–low 80s) from Sunday on. Translation: this weekend is a water-and-shade weekend; midweek is umbrella-and-puddles weather, which most kids love just fine.
The headline: free swim at Gottesman Pool (Davis Center)
The Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center (Harlem Meer, north end) is running free public swim this week. Parent-and-tot and children’s learn-to-swim sessions run Thursday Jul 9 (morning and midday slots), with open lap-swim mornings on the other days. It’s first-come, first-served and it’s free — the single best move for a family in a heat wave.
Sat Jul 4 — Model Yacht Racing, 9 AM, Conservatory Water
An easy, charming Fourth-of-July morning: the model-yacht fleet races at Kerbs Boathouse on Conservatory Water at 9 AM — kids love watching the little boats, and it’s over before the worst heat. Get there early; by late morning the park’s picnic crowds and heat both build. (Note: East Meadow is closed Sat/Sun, so aim for shadier, water-adjacent spots.)
Weekend markets & picnics
The Columbus Circle Food Market runs at Merchants’ Gate (Fri & the following Thu), and Unity Markets sets up at Farmers’ Gate (110th & Lenox) on the Fourth — easy snack-and-stroll stops. Heads-up: FIFA World Cup buses jam Columbus Circle from 6 AM Sunday, so the SW corner is hectic early — enter elsewhere with a stroller.
Midweek — rainy-day park, and free swim continues
Monday and Tuesday are the wettest (great for puddle-stomping and a mostly-empty playground between showers), cooling everything down. The heat is off, the pool stays open mornings, and by Thursday the learn-to-swim sessions add structured water time. A gentle note: Bethesda Terrace is closed all week, so skip it as a meetup spot.
