Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Fri Jul 3 – Thu Jul 9
Hi cyclists,
Clean loop all week — no races, no charity rides, no drive closures. What shapes your week instead is a dangerous heat wave today and tomorrow, then a wet, stormy cool-down, plus one recurring congestion point at the SW corner.
Weather this week
100° today and 96° on the Fourth make afternoon riding genuinely unsafe — ride at dawn or wait it out — then Sunday breaks into a cooler but soaking run of thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday. Early laps beat the heat Friday–Saturday and beat the storms Monday–Tuesday; the low-80s midweek mornings are the pick of the week if you time the radar.
Fri Jul 3 & Sat Jul 4 — 100° then 96°, dawn laps only
Both drives are fully open, but this is heat you don’t argue with. Get your laps in before 8 AM and carry more water than you think you need. The Fourth layers on holiday picnic crowds from late morning and afternoon storms, so an early roll is the only good roll — pedestrians spike across the loop by midday.
Sun Jul 5 — FIFA buses jam Columbus Circle from 6 AM
Heat eases to 85° and the loop rides well, but FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle starting 6 AM — expect buses and dense foot traffic at Merchants’ Gate and the 59th Street entrance. Roll cautiously through the SW corner or enter at W 72nd / Engineers’ Gate to skip it. Chance of showers, nothing severe.
Mon Jul 6 – Wed Jul 8 — cool, quiet, and wet
The drives are open and traffic-free, and low-80s mornings are the best riding of the week — but Monday and Tuesday carry real thunderstorms, so watch the sky and grab the dry windows. Maintenance closes The Pond lawn (Mon) and the Bowling Greens (Tue), neither of which touches the loop. No spectator gatherings pushing onto the drives.
Thu Jul 9 — 88°, drying out
Warmer but fine for an early ride; open loop, mostly sunny. The free Shaggy SummerStage show fills Rumsey at 7 PM, so there’s some evening pedestrian traffic near the 72nd Street Cross Drive around then — a dusk-ride heads-up, not a closure.
Quick recap
No closures or races all week — East and West Drives open every day.
Fri & Sat — heat wave (100°/96°): dawn laps only; afternoons are unsafe.
Sun, from 6 AM — FIFA buses at Columbus Circle: dense congestion at Merchants’ Gate; favor W 72nd or Engineers’ Gate.
