Central Park Stage: Romeo & Juliet continues at the Delacorte
Hi theater fans,
Free Shakespeare in the Park’s Romeo & Juliet opened at the Delacorte this past weekend and continues its run into the week — the headline for anyone who wants Shakespeare under the stars. A heat wave is the thing to plan around for an open-air night.
Weather this week
A serious heat wave — 96° Wed, 100° Thu, 101° Fri — easing to a stormy 97° on the Fourth, with thunderstorm risk Friday into Saturday evening. For a Delacorte night, the early-week and Sunday evenings will be the more bearable ones; keep an eye on the radar for any Friday/Saturday show.
All week — Free Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo & Juliet (Delacorte Theater)
Romeo & Juliet continues at the Delacorte Theater at Turtle Pond — the quintessential Central Park theater night, free under the stars. A heads-up on the details: our permit feed only surfaces the Delacorte’s dates sporadically, so check the Public Theater’s calendar for exact performances and the free-ticket lottery before you go. The Delacorte is conventionally dark Mondays, with evening curtains the rest of the week. If you’ve never done a Delacorte night, this run is the one — just bring water for a hot evening.
Also onstage — the Swedish Cottage marionettes
The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre runs its summer family show on its own standing schedule (reserve ahead) — a hand-built puppet stage that’s a Central Park institution. Like the Delacorte, its dates don’t flow cleanly into our permit data, so confirm showtimes with the Conservancy before making the trip.
Live performance to fill in around the play
If you want more than the one stage, SummerStage and the Bandshell carry the week:
- Wed Jul 1, 5 PM — Shabaka / Kokoroko / Omar / Lovie (free, Rumsey Playfield): spiritual jazz and Afrobeat with real theatrical presence.
- Thu Jul 2, 2 PM — Acoustic Songwriters Day (Bandshell Plaza): storytelling set to music, free (it’s 100° — sit in the shade).
- Fri Jul 3, 5:30 PM — Odd Mob (Rumsey Playfield): high-energy electronic; watch the storm risk.
