Central Park Running Heads-Up: Mon Jun 29 – Sun Jul 5
Hey runners,
No races and no charity walks on the loop this week — every drive is open from Monday on. The catch is the calendar isn’t the obstacle this week; the thermometer is. A serious heat wave builds through the holiday.
Weather this week
Warm Monday (85°), hotter Tuesday (86°) with overnight thunderstorms, then a dangerous spike — 96° Wed, 100° Thu, 101° Fri, and a stormy 97° on the Fourth. Run before 8 AM all week and treat Wednesday-through-Saturday afternoons as off-limits; this is heat-illness territory, not push-through weather.
Mon Jun 29 & Tue Jun 30 — open loop, building heat
The loop is yours both mornings — no permits touch the drives. Front-load before 8 AM while it’s still in the 70s. One heads-up for Tuesday: FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle from 6 AM, so the Merchants’ Gate corner (the SW entrance) will be clogged with buses and foot traffic early. If you normally start there, drop in at W 72nd or run the Reservoir instead. Storms roll in Tuesday night.
Wed Jul 1 — 96°, the heat gets real
This is where it turns. Before 7 AM or don’t go — by mid-morning the loop is unsafe for anything beyond a shakeout. Carry water; the Reservoir fountains are running. (SummerStage has Shabaka at Rumsey at 5 PM — minor evening foot traffic near 72nd, but you shouldn’t be on the loop in the afternoon anyway.)
Thu Jul 2 & Fri Jul 3 — 100° and 101°, dawn only
Back-to-back triple digits. Dawn runs only, kept short, or move them indoors. If you have a key workout this week, it belongs at first light Thursday before the worst of it. Afternoons are simply out — heat advisory conditions.
Sat Jul 4 & Sun Jul 5 — holiday heat, early or not at all
The Fourth is 97° with afternoon thunderstorms and holiday picnic crowds building from late morning. Get your miles in at sunrise, before both the heat and the crowds. Sunday eases off the peak as the storms clear, but FIFA bus ops return to Columbus Circle at 6 AM — same SW-corner congestion, so favor W 72nd or Engineers’ Gate for an early start.
Quick recap
No races or loop closures all week — the drives are open every morning.
Tue & Sun, from 6 AM — FIFA bus ops at Columbus Circle: Merchants’ Gate congestion; enter at W 72nd or the Reservoir.
Wed–Sat — heat wave (96–101°): run before 7–8 AM, hydrate hard, skip every afternoon.
Cleanest windows: dawn, every day. The loop is open — the heat is the only thing in your way.
