Free Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet at the Delacorte — plus Laurie Anderson at SummerStage
Central Park Theater: Fri Jun 26 – Thu Jul 2
Hi theater fans,
Free Shakespeare in the Park is running Romeo & Juliet at the Delacorte, a performance-art legend takes Rumsey, and the marionettes are back at the Swedish Cottage. Here’s your week onstage.
Weather this week
Showery this weekend (mid-70s Sat, mid-80s Sun) then a heat wave midweek, up to 94°F Thursday with afternoon/evening thunderstorm chances Tue–Thu. For the open-air Delacorte and Rumsey shows, the weekend evenings are the comfortable ones — and keep an eye on the radar for any midweek outdoor plans.
Fri Jun 26 – Sun Jun 28, 8 PM — Free Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo & Juliet
The headline: Free Shakespeare in the Park is staging Romeo & Juliet at the Delacorte Theater, 8 PM nightly this weekend. It’s the quintessential Central Park theater experience under the stars at Turtle Pond. Free tickets go fast — line up early, enter the lottery, or watch for standby. If you’ve never done a Delacorte night, this is the one.
Fri Jun 26, 8 PM — Laurie Anderson: Republic of Love (Rumsey)
Not a play, but unmissable for anyone who loves performance: Laurie Anderson brings Republic of Love to SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield — storytelling, electronics, and violin from one of the great avant-garde theatrical artists. Free. (Same 8 PM slot as the Delacorte — you’ll have to choose.)
Sat Jun 27 — Marionettes + tango
Family-and-folk theater notes: ‘Little Red’s Hood’ at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (the classic hand-built puppet stage — reserve ahead), and an evening of tango at the Shakespeare statue (6 PM) on the Mall, if you like your performance al fresco and participatory.
Mon Jun 29 – Thu Jul 2 — between shows
A quieter midweek for the stage, with the Delacorte running its own schedule. The 40 in Focus photo exhibit at the Arsenal (free, daily) is a worthwhile companion if you want park-arts context, and SummerStage’s music slate continues midweek.
