Central Park Nature Notes: Fri Jun 26 – Thu Jul 2
Hi nature lovers,
A quiet, green week for the park’s wild corners — bird walks, fishing at the Meer, and a heat wave that makes the dawn hours the only ones worth having. Here’s where the calm is.
Weather this week
Damp and mild this weekend (mid-70s Sat with showers, mid-80s Sun) — good for greenery and birds — then a heat wave Tuesday onward, peaking near 94°F Thursday. The rain freshens the Ramble and the Loch; midweek, the dawn chorus and early hours are the only comfortable (and best) time to be out.
Fri Jun 26 & through the week — Birding Bob at the Boathouse
Bird Watching with Birding Bob runs its near-daily walks from the Loeb Boathouse (Fri 8:30 AM; Sat/Sun 7:30 & 9:30 AM). Late June is past peak migration, but the Ramble is full of breeding residents — warblers, the resident red-tails, herons at the Lake. A reliable, well-led way into the park’s quietest woods.
Sat Jun 27 — Fishing at the Harlem Meer + quiet north end
Catch-and-release fishing at the Harlem Meer runs from the Dana Discovery Center (10 AM) — poles and bait provided, a gentle way to spend a morning at the water’s edge. With Pride events drawing crowds to the south end this weekend, the north end is yours: the Loch and the Ravine (listen for the waterfalls after the rain), North Woods, and the Conservatory Garden.
Sun Jun 28 — head north while the south celebrates
The south end is busy with the SummerStage Pride celebration. Perfect excuse to spend the day in the park’s wildest quarter: Hallett Nature Sanctuary (if open hours align), the Ramble mid-morning, and Turtle Pond below Belvedere, where the turtles bask and the dragonflies are out in force in this warmth.
Tue Jul 1 – Thu Jul 2 — dawn is everything
The heat builds to 94° Thursday. Wildlife goes quiet and shaded by midday, so do you: be in the Ramble or North Woods by 6:30–7 AM for the dawn chorus and the coolest air, and retreat to the deep shade (the Loch, the Pinetum) before the heat tops out. Carry water.
Quick recap
