Central Park Music: Laurie Anderson tonight, Dreamland Pride Sun, SHABAKA Wed
Central Park Music: Fri Jun 26 – Thu Jul 2
Hey music fans,
A genuinely great SummerStage week at Rumsey Playfield — avant-garde tonight, a huge Pride dance party Sunday, and a stacked jazz-and-soul bill Wednesday. All free. Here’s the lineup.
Weather this week
Showery and mild this weekend (mid-70s to mid-80s), turning hot midweek — up to 94°F Thursday with scattered evening thunderstorm chances Tue–Thu. The outdoor shows this week are evening/afternoon slots, so heat is manageable; keep an eye on the radar for Wednesday’s show.
Fri Jun 26, 8 PM — Laurie Anderson: Republic of Love (Rumsey, free)
The headline: Laurie Anderson brings Republic of Love to Rumsey Playfield — a free SummerStage evening of the avant-garde icon’s storytelling, electronics, and violin. If you only go to one show this week, this is it. Doors fill early for the marquee names; get there ahead of 8.
Sat Jun 27, 5 PM — World Cup Watch Party (Rumsey)
SummerStage turns Rumsey into a World Cup watch party (Panama v. England, 5 PM) — big screen, DJ sets, festival energy. More vibe than concert, but a fun free hang if football’s your thing. (For something acoustic, there’s tango at the Shakespeare statue, 6 PM.)
Sun Jun 28, 3–10 PM — Dreamland: Pride in Central Park (Rumsey)
The week’s big one: Dreamland: Pride in Central Park at Rumsey Playfield, 3–10 PM — a full SummerStage Pride celebration headlined by SG Lewis and Kungs, with Bob’s Dance Shop, Dani Brasil, and MkX. House and dance all afternoon into the night. Free; expect it to be packed.
Wed Jul 1, 5 PM — SHABAKA / Kokoroko / Omar / Lovie (Rumsey, free)
A spectacular free bill: SHABAKA (the London spiritual-jazz force), Afrobeat collective Kokoroko, neo-soul legend Omar, and Lovie — 5 PM at Rumsey Playfield. Arrive early; this is one of the best free jazz/soul lineups of the season. Watch Wednesday’s storm chance.
Looking ahead
The Naumburg Orchestral Concerts return to the Bandshell Tuesday Jul 7 (Delirium Musicum) — your classical fix is a week and a half out.
