Central Park Family Plans: Fri Jun 26 – Thu Jul 2
Hi families,
Zoo feedings, the carousel, marionettes, model boats, and free World Cup soccer — a packed kid week, with a heat wave to plan around by Thursday. Here’s the plan.
Weather this week
Showery but mild this weekend (mid-70s to mid-80s), then it heats up fast — 89°F Tue, 91°F Wed, 94°F Thu with afternoon storm chances. Do the open-air stuff this weekend and weekday mornings; from Tuesday, hit the shaded and indoor options (zoo, marionette theater) by midday and bring water bottles.
Fri Jun 26 — Zoo day + the carousel
The Central Park Zoo has sea lion feedings and penguin feedings today (check the daily board for times), plus Zoo Quests for older kids. The Central Park Carousel (near 65th St) spins 10 AM–6 PM. And FIFA Arena: Free Soccer in Central Park is on at Tavern on the Green (10 AM) — free drop-in soccer for kids during the World Cup.
Sat Jun 27 — Model boats + marionettes
Two classics: the Central Park Model Yacht Club races at Conservatory Water (10 AM) — kids love watching the little sailboats — and ‘Little Red’s Hood’ at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood; reserve ahead). The Farm Stand is open at 10 AM, and the zoo feedings repeat. Fishing at the Harlem Meer (catch-and-release, poles provided) runs from the Dana Discovery Center.
Sun Jun 28 — Davis Center + brunch music
Events on The Green at the Davis Center (the new Harlem-Meer pool/rink complex) has family programming, and there’s live music at Tavern on the Green’s brunch (noon). Note: the south end is busy with the Dreamland Pride celebration at Rumsey Playfield in the afternoon — fun but crowded; the north end and the zoo stay easier with little ones.
Mon Jun 29 – Thu Jul 2 — heat plan
Quieter on the calendar, hotter on the thermometer. Best family bets midweek: morning zoo visits, the carousel before noon, and the Swedish Cottage marionette shows (indoors, cool). The 40 in Focus photo exhibit at the Arsenal (9 AM–5 PM, free) is an easy air-conditioned stop. Thursday hits 94° — keep it short and shady.
Quick recap
Fri 6/26 — Zoo feedings + carousel + FIFA free soccer (Tavern): classic kid day.
Sat 6/27, 10 AM — Model yacht races (Conservatory Water) + marionettes (Swedish Cottage): reserve the puppet show.
Sun 6/28 — Davis Center programming + Tavern brunch music: north end easier; Pride crowds the south.
Mon–Thu — heat (up to 94°): mornings, shade, and indoor stops (zoo, marionettes, Arsenal exhibit).
