Central Park Sports: Mon Jun 22 – Sun Jun 28
Central Park Sports — Mon Jun 22 – Sun Jun 28
Your Sunday week-ahead look, covering Mon Jun 22 through Sun Jun 28.
Hey sports fans — a heavy league week on the diamonds, two NYRR races back-to-back on the weekend, and free World Cup soccer most days. The Front Runners NY Pride Run 4M is Saturday (8 AM) and the Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M is Sunday (8:15 AM) — both full fields on the park drives. The rain Mon–Tue will scramble early-week games; the weekend is the full slate.
Weather this week
Storms Monday (76°) and showers Tuesday (79°) — expect field closures and rainouts early — then a dry, sunny Wednesday (83°) and Thursday (84°), and a hot, unsettled weekend (82° Friday, 86° Saturday with afternoon storm chances). Grass fields at Heckscher, North Meadow, and the Great Lawn stay soft into midweek; weekend heat is the main factor for the races and Saturday’s outdoor meet.
Mon 6/22 – Tue 6/23 — Wet fields, expect rainouts
Softball, baseball, kickball, and soccer-training permits fill North Meadow, Heckscher, and the Great Lawn, but storms Monday and showers Tuesday will close soft fields and push games. Check before heading out. The FIFA Arena free soccer at Tavern on the Green runs daily through the World Cup if you want a kickabout in a dry window.
Wed 6/24 — Fields dry out, full league slate
83° and sunny. The diamonds come back — a normal busy weekday of adult softball and youth baseball at North Meadow and Heckscher. A 7 PM “Media Challenge” runs on the Lower Loop in the evening if you’re around the south end.
Thu 6/25 — Clear, normal weeknight games
Mostly sunny, 84°. Standard league play across the fields — softball, kickball, youth training. Good conditions front to back, plus free FIFA Arena soccer at Tavern on the Green.
Fri 6/26 — Warm, unsettled, watch the cells
82° with storm chances. Games are on, but watch the radar — passing thunderstorms could pause or pull matches off soft fields late.
Sat 6/27, 8 AM — Front Runners Pride Run 4M, plus a loaded field day
Hot at 86° with an afternoon storm chance — hydrate. The Front Runners NY LGBT Pride Run 4M starts at 8 AM (Race-Day Central at the Naumburg Bandshell), putting a full NYRR field on the drives ~7:30–10 AM. Then the slate is full: the MSA Outdoor Meet by the tennis courts (9 AM–2 PM), model yacht racing on Conservatory Water (9 AM–3 PM), the Skate Circle at Dead Road North (2–7 PM), and heavy adult/youth softball, baseball, and kickball across North Meadow and Heckscher. East Meadow is closed all weekend.
Sun 6/28, 8:15 AM — Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M, plus the diamonds
Summer warmth, possible afternoon storm. The Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M starts at 8:15 AM — one of the largest inclusive races in the country, with handcyclists, wounded veterans, and athletes of all abilities on the drives ~7:30–10:30 AM. Then a full slate of adult softball, baseball, and kickball across the fields, plus the Skate Circle (2–7 PM). East Meadow stays closed; Dreamland Pride fills Rumsey in the afternoon.
