Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Mon Jun 22 – Sun Jun 28
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up — Mon Jun 22 – Sun Jun 28
Your Sunday week-ahead look, covering Mon Jun 22 through Sun Jun 28.
Hey cyclists — clean drives Monday through Friday, then two NYRR races take the loop both weekend mornings: the Front Runners NY Pride Run 4M Saturday (8 AM) and the Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M Sunday (8:15 AM). Expect runners on East and West Drive roughly 7:30–10:30 AM each day — ride very early or skip the loop those mornings. Otherwise the only friction is the recurring southwest-corner congestion.
Weather this week
Thunderstorms Monday (76°) and showers Tuesday (79°) clear to a sunny Wednesday (83°) and mostly sunny Thursday (84°), then it gets hot and unsettled — storm chances Friday (82°) and a humid 86° Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are your clean-pavement gold; the racing weekend means an early ride (before 7:30) or none at all on the loop Sat–Sun, with heat on top.
Mon 6/22 — Wet drives, buses at Columbus Circle
Showers and thunderstorms, 76°. Drives open but wet — take Harlem Hill and the West Drive descents with room. FIFA World Cup bus operations occupy Columbus Circle / Merchants’ Gate from 6 AM to 11 PM, so the southwest corner is congested with buses and foot traffic all day.
Tue 6/23 — Damp and quiet
Rain showers likely, 79°. No loop impact; an easy spin day if you don’t mind wet roads. The Naumburg crowd gathers at the Bandshell in the evening but doesn’t reach the drives.
Wed 6/24 — Clean, dry, fast
83° and sunny — the best riding day of the week. Loop wide open; get your intervals or long miles in. Note a small 7 PM “Media Challenge” on the Lower Loop if you ride at dusk.
Thu 6/25 — Great pavement, busy SW corner
Mostly sunny, 84°. Loop open and fast. FIFA buses return to Columbus Circle from 6 AM and the Columbus Circle Food Market opens at Merchants’ Gate (9:30 AM) — heavy pedestrian spillover at the southwest corner all day.
Fri 6/26 — Last open loop, warm and unsettled
82° with a chance of storms. No events on the drives — your last clean ride before the racing weekend. Pavement may be damp from passing cells.
Sat 6/27, ~7:30–10 AM — Front Runners Pride Run 4M on the drives
The loop carries a race field this morning. The Front Runners NY Pride Run 4M (start 8 AM, staging at the Naumburg Bandshell) fills East and West Drive roughly 7:30–10 AM. Ride before 7:30 or after 10:30, or stay off the loop — and remember it’s also 86° and humid. FIFA buses are back at Columbus Circle; East Meadow closed.
Sun 6/28, ~7:30–10:30 AM — Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M on the drives
Loop’s occupied again. The Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M (start 8:15 AM) brings handcycles and a large inclusive field to the drives 7:30–10:30 AM — give extra space and ride before 7:30 or after 11. From mid-afternoon, Dreamland: Pride at Rumsey (~3 PM) sends big crowds across the 72nd Street area, so wrap your ride by early afternoon.
Quick recap
- Drives clean Mon–Fri — Wed 6/24 + Thu 6/25 are the best pavement.
- Sat 6/27, ~7:30–10 AM: Front Runners Pride Run 4M on the loop — ride before 7:30, after 10:30, or skip.
- Sun 6/28, ~7:30–10:30 AM: Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M on the loop — same, plus handcycles, give room.
- Mon, Thu & Sat: FIFA World Cup buses at Columbus Circle / Merchants’ Gate — congested SW corner; Thu adds the food market.
- Sun 6/28 PM: Dreamland Pride crowds near Rumsey/72nd St — finish early.
