Central Park Theater: A free-Shakespeare weekend, plus the Public Theater Mobile Unit Tuesday
Central Park Theater — Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Quick note: this edition usually lands Friday night — I let it slip a day again, so here it is Saturday morning, covering Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26.
Hey theater fans — this is a front-loaded Shakespeare weekend: two free outdoor Julius Caesar productions running at once, The Taming of the Shrew at Summit Rock on Saturday, and then the Public Theater Mobile Unit at the Great Lawn on Tuesday. The back half of the week goes dark outdoors — so make your plans for Sat, Sun, and Tue.
Weather this week
A sunny, dry weekend (Sat 84°, Sun 83° with a small late-day storm risk) is ideal for outdoor seating, then Mon–Tue turn wet (showers and thunderstorms, 77°/80°), Wednesday clears (84°), and Thu–Fri stay warm and unsettled (80°/83°). Tuesday’s Mobile Unit show is the one with rain exposure — check the Public Theater’s status before heading to the Great Lawn, and bring a poncho just in case.
Sat 6/20 — A Shakespeare triple-header
The week’s biggest theater day. The Taming of the Shrew plays Summit Rock at 2 PM; Julius Caesar (Part 2 of 2) runs at The Pool from 5 PM; and NY Classical’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar opens at the West 103rd Street entrance at 7 PM — two different free Caesar stagings the same weekend, plus a comedy in the afternoon. For something adjacent, Tango at the Shakespeare Statue (6 PM) turns the Mall into a performance of its own. 84° and clear — perfect for a blanket and a long afternoon-into-evening.
Sun 6/21 — Both Caesars return
83°, sunny early. Julius Caesar (Part 2 of 2) plays The Pool at 5 PM and NY Classical’s Julius Caesar runs at the W 103rd St entrance at 7 PM again — your second chance at either if Saturday filled up. Get seated before the small afternoon storm chance and you’re set.
Mon 6/22 — Dark (and wet)
Showers and thunderstorms, 77°. No outdoor theater on the calendar — a good night to read the script before Tuesday or catch something indoors.
Tue 6/23 — Public Theater Mobile Unit at the Great Lawn, 6 PM
The week’s marquee. The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit performs free at the Great Lawn at 6 PM — the company’s stripped-down, community-touring Shakespeare. Rain showers are likely earlier (80°), so confirm the show is on before you go. (Bonus for the music-curious: The Knights play the Naumburg Bandshell the same evening at 7:30.)
Wed 6/24 — Dark, but the prettiest night to be out
84° and sunny — no theater on the books, ironically the best-weather evening of the week. If the Mobile Unit or a Caesar tempts you to a repeat, this is the night you’d wish had a show.
Thu 6/25 — Dark
80° with a chance of storms and nothing scheduled outdoors. A quiet night for the outdoor stages.
Fri 6/26 — Dark
83° with scattered showers and no outdoor productions listed. The week’s theater lives entirely in its first half.
Quick recap
- Sat 6/20 is the big day: Taming of the Shrew at Summit Rock (2 PM), Julius Caesar at The Pool (5 PM), NY Classical’s Julius Caesar at W 103rd (7 PM), Tango at the Shakespeare Statue (6 PM).
- Sun 6/21: both Julius Caesar productions return (5 PM at The Pool, 7 PM at W 103rd).
- Tue 6/23, 6 PM: Public Theater Mobile Unit at the Great Lawn — the marquee; check for rain.
- Mon, Wed–Fri are dark outdoors — and the Delacorte/Shakespeare in the Park season still isn’t confirmed in our calendar.
