Central Park Sports: Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Central Park Sports — Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Quick note: this edition usually lands Friday night — I let it slip a day again, so here it is Saturday morning, covering Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26.
Hey sports fans — a full week of league play with the season’s usual three-field rhythm (North Meadow, Great Lawn, Heckscher), one fun run on Sunday, and model-yacht racing on Saturday. Thursday is the busiest day on the fields; the only thing that shifts schedules is the Mon–Tue rain.
Weather this week
Sunny and dry for the weekend (Sat 84°, Sun 83° with a small afternoon storm risk), then showers and thunderstorms Mon–Tue (77°/80°) that could soften fields and trigger rainouts, a clear 84° Wednesday, and warm, unsettled Thu–Fri (80°/83°). Expect Mon–Tue games to be the ones at risk; check with your league before heading out those two days.
Sat 6/20 — Busy fields, plus model-yacht racing
49 permits across the fields — North Meadow (22), Great Lawn softball (13), and Heckscher (13) all packed under a sunny 84°. For something different, Model Yacht Racing runs on Conservatory Water at Kerbs Boathouse from 9 AM — a great watch. The East Meadow is closed all weekend, so nothing’s staged there.
Sun 6/21 — Mile Square Schlep Run + Sunday leagues
The Mile Square Schlep Run goes off at the 72nd Street Cross Drive, 9–11 AM (Runs & Races) — the week’s one road event. On the fields, another full slate: North Meadow (23) and Heckscher (18) carry the day, Great Lawn lighter at 6. 83°, get the morning games in before the afternoon storm chance.
Mon 6/22 — Rain threatens a 60-permit slate
60 permits booked — North Meadow (21), Heckscher (19), Great Lawn (18) — but showers and thunderstorms (77°) put Monday’s games most at risk of the week. Confirm before you go; wet-field cancellations are likely.
Tue 6/23 — Still wet, heavy bookings
63 permits — North Meadow (23), Great Lawn (20), Heckscher (18) — under rain showers (80°). Same story as Monday: the schedule is loaded but the sky may have the final say.
Wed 6/24 — Clear skies, clean slate
84° and sunny — the best playing day of the week. 61 permits (North Meadow 22, Great Lawn 21, Heckscher 16) on dry fields. If your league got rained out Mon–Tue, this is the makeup day everyone will want.
Thu 6/25 — The week’s busiest day
71 permits — the peak — led by North Meadow (30) and Great Lawn (23), with Heckscher at 16. 80° with a chance of storms; if it stays dry, the fields are at maximum capacity. Get there early for any walk-on space.
Fri 6/26 — Lighter close
44 permits — North Meadow (18), Great Lawn (14), Heckscher (10) — under a warm 83° with scattered showers. An easier day to grab field time as the week winds down.
Quick recap
- Thu 6/25 is the peak — 71 permits, North Meadow (30) and Great Lawn (23) maxed.
