Central Park Running Heads-Up: Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Central Park Running Heads-Up — Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Quick note: this edition usually lands Friday night — I let it slip a day again, so here it is Saturday morning, covering Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26.
Hey runners — the loop is clean all week. No races on the drives, no charity walks, no closures on East, West, or Center Drive. The only thing to plan around is the weather: a gorgeous sunny weekend, a wet Monday–Tuesday, then a postcard Wednesday before it turns unsettled again.
Weather this week
Sunny and warm to open (Sat 84°, Sun 83° with a late storm chance), then showers and thunderstorms settle in Mon (77°) and Tue (80°), Wednesday clears to a perfect 84° and sunny, and Thu–Fri stay warm (80°/83°) with on-and-off shower chances. No heat wave this week — front-load nothing, just dodge the Mon–Tue rain and save your quality session for Wednesday’s dry window.
Sat 6/20 — Clean loop, prime long-run morning
84° and sunny, no permits anywhere on the drives. The East Meadow is closed all weekend, but that’s a cool-down detail, not a route issue. If you’ve got a long one in you, this is the morning — conditions don’t beat this until Wednesday.
Sun 6/21 — Mile Square Schlep Run on the 72nd St Cross Drive, 9–11 AM
The week’s only running event stages on the 72nd Street Cross Drive and Bandshell Plaza, 9–11 AM. It’s not a full-loop closure — the main drives stay open — but expect a runner cluster crossing mid-park and some congestion around the Bandshell. Do your loop before 9 or just steer clear of the 72nd St cut for those two hours. 83° with an afternoon storm chance, so go in the morning regardless.
Mon 6/22 — Wet loop, watch the SW corner
Showers and thunderstorms, 77°. The loop is clean but slick — fine if you don’t mind getting soaked. One heads-up: FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle from 6 AM, so if you usually enter at Merchants’ Gate you’ll hit idling buses at the southwest corner. Enter at another gate or just know it’s there.
Tue 6/23 — Wet loop, quieter day
Rain showers likely, 80°. Clean drives, no impact. The Naumburg concert fills the Bandshell area in the evening, but that’s well off the loop. A soft recovery-run day if the rain backs off.
Wed 6/24 — The week’s gem: clean and sunny
84° and sunny, loop wide open. This is your day — bank the long run or the workout you skipped Mon–Tue. The only blip is an evening “Media Challenge” rolling on the Lower Loop at 7 PM, long after most morning miles are done.
Thu 6/25 — Clean loop, FIFA buses again
80° with a chance of storms. Drives are clear. FIFA World Cup bus ops return to Columbus Circle at 6 AM — same SW-corner heads-up as Monday for Merchants’ Gate runners.
Fri 6/26 — Clean loop, normal Friday
83° with a chance of showers, no events on or near the drives. Run when the rain gives you a window; nothing structural in your way.
Quick recap
- Clean loop all week — no races, walks, or drive closures. The calendar is yours.
- Sun 6/21, 9–11 AM: Mile Square Schlep Run on the 72nd St Cross Drive — run early or skip the mid-park cut.
- Wed 6/24 is the day — 84° and sunny, the one dry, clean window in a wet week. Save your quality session for it.
- Mon & Thu, 6 AM: FIFA World Cup buses at Columbus Circle — Merchants’ Gate entry will be congested.
- Mon–Tue are wet (storms); Thu–Fri unsettled — flexible timing wins.
Have a strong week, — Central Park Guide
P.S. NYC Marathon training season opens this coming week (Mon Jun 29). Enjoy the quiet loop while you’ve got it — by July every dawn pace group in the city is back out there.
