Central Park Music: The Knights at Naumburg Tue, Make Music NY Sun, Black Country New Road Wed
Central Park Music — Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Quick note: this edition usually lands Friday night — I let it slip a day again, so here it is Saturday morning, covering Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26.
Hey music fans — this is a loaded week. The Knights play the Naumburg Bandshell Tuesday (the 121st season of the oldest free outdoor classical series in the country), Make Music New York fills the park Sunday afternoon, and SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield brings Black Country, New Road on Wednesday — all free. Plus lakeside guitar and tango on Saturday.
Weather this week
A dry, sunny weekend (Sat 84°, Sun 83° with a small late-day storm risk) turns wet Mon–Tue (showers and thunderstorms, 77°/80°), clears beautifully Wednesday (84°, sunny), then stays warm and unsettled Thu–Fri (80°/83°). Tuesday’s Naumburg concert and Wednesday’s SummerStage show both sit in decent evening windows — keep a poncho handy Tuesday and you’ll be fine.
Sat 6/20 — Lakeside guitar at Hernshead, tango on the Mall
84° and sunny. “That Guitar Man from Central Park” plays Hernshead at noon — a perfect lakeside set. In the evening, Tango at the Shakespeare Statue (6 PM) turns the Mall into a dance floor. The June SummerStage Festival also runs at Rumsey Playfield through the weekend.
Sun 6/21 — Make Music New York + folk dancing
83°, sunny early. Make Music New York lands free performances at Summit Rock, Pilgrim Hill, and the Dana Discovery Center (3 PM) — drift between them. Earlier, international folk dancers at King Jagiello Plaza (11 AM) add live movement near the Turtle Pond. Go before the afternoon storm chance builds.
Mon 6/22 — New York Sings Yiddish at Rumsey Playfield
Showers and thunderstorms, 77° — but the evening may give you a window. “New York Sings Yiddish: Passing the Torch” plays SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield (7 PM), free. A rich, specific program if the rain backs off — check the SummerStage status before you head over.
Tue 6/23 — The Knights at the Naumburg Bandshell, 7:30 PM
The week’s headline. The Knights — the adventurous Brooklyn orchestral collective — perform free at the Naumburg Bandshell at 7:30 PM, part of the 121st Naumburg season. Rain showers are likely earlier (80°), but Bandshell concerts are an institution; bring a blanket and a backup poncho and get there early for a good spot on the plaza.
Wed 6/24 — Black Country, New Road at SummerStage, 6 PM
84° and sunny — the perfect night for it. SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield presents Black Country, New Road with Horsegirl and Sharp Pins (6 PM), free. One of the best indie bills the park will host this summer, and the weather finally cooperates. Go early; the free line builds.
Thu 6/25 — Quiet on the music front
80° with a chance of storms and no scheduled concerts. A good night to catch your breath after three big ones — or revisit the “40 in Focus” SummerStage photo exhibit at the Arsenal Gallery if you want a music fix indoors.
Fri 6/26 — Festival grounds only
83° with scattered showers. No marquee show, just the ongoing June SummerStage Festival activity at Rumsey. A calm close before the next round of summer programming.
