Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up — Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26
Quick note: this edition usually lands Friday night — I let it slip a day again, so here it is Saturday morning, covering Sat Jun 20 – Fri Jun 26.
Hey cyclists — the drives are open all week. No races on the loop, no charity rides, no closures on East, West, or Center Drive. Your only real variables are the weather and a couple of pedestrian-congestion spots at the southwest corner.
Weather this week
A sunny, dry weekend (Sat 84°, Sun 83° with a late-day storm risk) gives way to a wet Mon–Tue (showers and thunderstorms, 77°/80°), Wednesday clears to a flawless 84° and sunny, and Thu–Fri stay warm (80°/83°) with scattered shower chances. No heat to fight — Wednesday is the standout ride day; Mon–Tue, watch the radar and the slick pavement.
Sat 6/20 — Clean drives, sunny dawn-loop day
84° and sunny, nothing on the drives. Get your early laps in before the pedestrian and tourist load builds — by mid-morning the loop fills with a clear, warm Saturday’s worth of foot traffic.
Sun 6/21 — Pedestrian cluster at the 72nd St Cross Drive, 9–11 AM
The Mile Square Schlep Run stages on the 72nd Street Cross Drive and Bandshell Plaza, 9–11 AM. The drives stay open, but expect a knot of runners and spectators crossing mid-park — ease off through the 72nd St transverse and Bandshell stretch during that window, or ride early before it sets up. 83° with an afternoon storm risk, so morning is the move.
Mon 6/22 — Wet drives, congestion at Columbus Circle
Showers and thunderstorms, 77° — slick descents on the West Drive sweep and into the bottom of the loop, so brake early. FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle from 6 AM, pushing extra vehicles and pedestrians around Merchants’ Gate. Give the southwest entrance room.
Tue 6/23 — Wet drives, calm otherwise
Rain showers likely, 80°. Open loop, no events touching the drives. The Naumburg concert draws an evening crowd to the Bandshell, but spectators stay off the roadway. A quiet, wet spin if you want it.
Wed 6/24 — The week’s best ride: clean and sunny
84° and sunny, drives wide open. This is the day to grab a long ride or your interval session — the one dry, clean window all week. Only an evening “Media Challenge” on the Lower Loop at 7 PM, well after a morning or midday ride.
Thu 6/25 — Open loop, FIFA buses return
80° with a storm chance. Drives clear. FIFA World Cup buses are back at Columbus Circle at 6 AM — same Merchants’ Gate congestion as Monday. Plan your entrance accordingly.
Fri 6/26 — Open loop, normal Friday
83° with a chance of showers and no loop impact. Ride the dry windows; nothing structural between you and a clean lap.
