Central Park Running Heads-Up: Mon Jun 15 – Sun Jun 21
Central Park Running Heads-Up — Mon Jun 15 – Sun Jun 21
Hey runners,
The loop is yours this week. After last week’s Central Park 5K, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and the CRCA crit all stacked on top of each other, East Drive, West Drive, and Center Drive are genuinely wide open — no races, no crits, no parades, no charity walks, no drive closures, nothing touching the loop any day Monday through Sunday. This is the first clean week in a while, so go run on it.
And the timing is good, because the front half of the week is the best running weather you’ll get all summer. Monday through Wednesday sits in the upper-70s with low humidity and mostly sun — exactly the window to front-load the quality miles the heat had been blocking. Whatever you’ve been putting off — the long run, the tempo, the workout that needs cool air — do it before Thursday.
Weather this week
Comfortable and dry Monday through Wednesday (upper-70s, low humidity) gives way to heat and likely thunderstorms Thursday, a warm Juneteenth Friday, and a hot, sunny solstice weekend in the mid-80s. Front-load your quality miles Mon–Wed while the loop is open and the air is cool, then go dawn-or-skip from Thursday on as the heat and storms move in.
Mon 6/15 — Clean loop, prime quality day
78°F, AM showers clearing to sun, low humidity. Once the morning showers move out, this is as good as it gets — open loop, cool air, dry pavement. If you’ve got a long run or a tempo on the calendar, today and the next two days are the spot. No closures anywhere on the drives.
Tue 6/16 — Open drives, full sun
79°F and sunny. Another low-humidity day with the entire loop open. Stack your second quality session here if you split workouts, or just enjoy uninterrupted miles. Nothing staging, nothing closing.
Wed 6/17 — Last cool day, PM storm chance
79°F with a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. The loop stays clean and the morning is prime — get out early to bank the miles before any afternoon cell builds. This is the last of the comfortable Mon–Wed window, so make it count.
Thu 6/18 — Heat and storms, run at dawn
87°F with thunderstorms likely. Big shift today. The loop is still open and race-free, but the heat is up and storms are in the forecast. Get your run in at dawn before the cells build, or take it indoors. Don’t gamble on a midday window today.
The Columbus Circle Food Market sets up around 9:30 AM at Merchants’ Gate — expect a little pedestrian congestion at the southwest entrance if you’re coming in that corner. Minor, just routing.
Fri 6/19 — Juneteenth, run the morning
84°F with a chance of rain. Juneteenth, and the loop itself stays open all day. One thing to plan around: Juneteenth in Seneca Village kicks off at 1 PM on West Drive around W 81st–86th (the Seneca Village site). It’s a gathering, not a closure — but expect foot traffic and people on West Drive in the 80s midday. Easy fix: run the morning and clear West Drive before noon. North of that gathering and the rest of the loop are unaffected.
Sat 6/20 — Hot and sunny, dawn long run
85°F and sunny. Loop is open and clean. With the heat up, a dawn long run is the move — get out before the sun is high and carry hydration. The Columbus Circle Food Market is back at 9:30 AM at Merchants’ Gate, so the same minor SW-entrance congestion applies. (Off-loop note: East Meadow is closed this weekend, but it’s nowhere near the drives.)
Sun 6/21 — Summer solstice, beat the heat early
86°F and sunny — Father’s Day and the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Loop is wide open. Use that early light: go at dawn for a long run while it’s still bearable, hydrate hard, and you’ll have the drives largely to yourself. (East Meadow stays closed, off-loop.)
