Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Mon Jun 15 – Sun Jun 21
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up — Mon Jun 15 – Sun Jun 21
Hey cyclists,
Good news, and it’s the rare kind: the loop is yours all week. No drive closures, no CRCA crit, no charity ride, no parade, nothing staging on East or West Drive that touches your lap. After last week’s pile-up — CRCA crit, the Central Park 5K on the north cross drive, the Puerto Rican Day Parade swallowing the east side — this is the first genuinely wide-open week in a while. Clean drives every single day, Monday through Sunday.
So the only thing shaping your week is the weather, and the weather hands you a gift early. Monday through Wednesday is cool, dry, and low-humidity — the best riding of the week by a wide margin. Bank your fast laps and long rides there. Thursday turns hot and stormy, Friday warms up for Juneteenth, and the solstice weekend goes hot and sunny with a gusty west wind. More on all of it below.
Weather this week
Comfortable upper-70s and low humidity Monday through Wednesday, then heat and thunderstorms arrive Thursday before a warm Juneteenth Friday and a hot, sunny solstice weekend. Bank your fast laps and long efforts Monday–Wednesday while it’s cool and still, and on the hot, windy weekend ride early and hydrate.
Mon 6/15 — Clean loop, 78°F, AM showers then sunny
The week opens with the loop fully open and no conflicts anywhere on the drives. A few AM showers clear to sunny at 78°F with low humidity — once the roads dry, this is prime riding. Get out mid-morning onward and put in the miles; nothing’s in your way today.
Tue 6/16 — Clean loop, 79°F, sunny and nearly still
The standout day. 79°F, sunny, and a light, nearly still wind — that’s a PR setup if you’ve been chasing a fast lap. No closures, no events on the drives, low humidity. If you want one clean, quick session this week, this is the morning to take it.
Wed 6/17 — Clean loop, 79°F, PM t-storm chance
Last of the cool, low-humidity stretch at 79°F, with a thunderstorm chance building in the afternoon. Ride the morning or midday to stay ahead of the cells — that’s your last comfortable long-ride window before the heat moves in. Drives stay open and clear all day.
Thu 6/18 — Clean loop, 87°F, thunderstorms likely
The turn. 87°F with thunderstorms likely and a south wind 7–16 mph. The loop is still open, but the weather isn’t — get a dawn ride in before the cells build, or take the rest day. Roads will be slick if you do head out.
One thing to flag at the SW corner: the Columbus Circle Food Market runs 9:30 AM at Merchants’ Gate. It’s not a closure, but expect walkers spilling toward the merge at Columbus Circle and the southwest entry. Stay heads-up through that pinch on your approach.
Fri 6/19 — Clean loop, 84°F, Juneteenth foot traffic on West Drive
Juneteenth, 84°F, chance of rain, west wind 10–15 mph. The loop is open — but Juneteenth in Seneca Village gathers at 1 PM on West Drive between W 81st and W 86th. It’s not a closure, just midday foot traffic in that stretch. Ride the morning to skip it entirely, or ease through and give the other side of the road room as you pass.
Sat 6/20 — Clean loop, 85°F, sunny and breezy
Solstice weekend kicks off hot and sunny at 85°F with a west wind 10–15 mph — that’s a headwind on the west-side climbs and a push down the east, plus gusts on the back stretch. The loop is clean and open. Ride early to beat the heat, and watch the Columbus Circle Food Market again at 9:30 AM (Merchants’ Gate) — walkers spilling near the SW merge.
Sun 6/21 — Clean loop, 86°F, Father’s Day and the solstice
The longest day of the year, sunny and hot at 86°F, gusty west wind 10–15 on the back stretch. Loop’s wide open — no closures, no events touching the drives. Get your laps in early before the heat peaks, hydrate hard, and enjoy a rare clean Sunday on a quiet loop.
