Central Park Walk Notes: Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Central Park Walk Notes — Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Walkers — apologies for the Saturday-morning arrival; this normally reaches you Friday night and I ran a day late. Two things shape the week: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is closed Sunday through Friday (the centerpiece is off the map this week), and the heat breaks beautifully Monday–Wednesday after a hot, busy weekend. Plan your scenic loop for midweek.
Weather this week
89°F Saturday, 88°F Sunday, 79°F Monday, 79°F Tuesday, 78°F Wednesday, 85°F Thursday (thunderstorms likely), 85°F Friday. Walkable before 10 AM and after 6 PM this weekend; then Monday–Wednesday is comfortable all day in the upper 70s. Thursday is the one to skip — thunderstorms most of the day.
Sat 6/13 — Active Saturday, good morning window; 89°F
Busy but pleasant early. Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse (9 AM–3 PM) is a charming detour around Conservatory Water near Fifth & 72nd. A Cappella in the Park at King Jagiello Plaza (1–5 PM) is a worthwhile northern-half swing-by, and Tango at the Shakespeare Statue Plaza (6–9 PM) is the week’s most atmospheric evening walk — the Mall with dancers and long light. Storytelling in Central Park runs at the Hans Christian Andersen statue (Conservatory Water, 10 AM) if you’ve got kids in tow. East Meadow closed.
Sun 6/14 — Puerto Rican Day Parade on the east side; head west
Heads-up: the Puerto Rican Day Parade brings big crowds to East Drive and the Central Park West sidewalk through midday, and the Bethesda Terrace closure begins today and holds all week — reroute your centerpiece stop. Go west and quiet instead: the Conservatory Garden (105th St) is at summer peak — arrive before 10 AM — and the Ramble runs 5–8°F cooler than the open paths. International Folk Dancers liven King Jagiello Plaza (11 AM–9 PM). Storms move in by evening, so make it a morning walk.
Mon 6/15 — Best walking day starts (79°F), Cherry Hill reopens
79°F, low humidity, Cherry Hill back open — the front of a lovely three-day stretch. With Bethesda Terrace closed, build the route around it: Gapstow Bridge (the Pond, 59th St) → the Mall → Cherry Hill fountain → Bow Bridge and the Lake → up to Belvedere Castle. The 40-in-Focus exhibit opens at the Arsenal (9 AM–5 PM) — a good first stop at the Fifth Ave entrance.
Tue 6/16 — Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill closed; Bow Bridge and the Lake
Cedar Hill (79th, east) and Pilgrim Hill (72nd) are both closed for maintenance. Reroute to Bow Bridge and the Lake — the path from Bank Rock Bay gives the water view without the hill detours. Another 79°F gem. The 40 in Focus Opening Reception (Arsenal, 6–8 PM, free) is a fine sunset destination.
Wed 6/17 — Great Lawn morning, last cool day (78°F)
The coolest, cleanest walking day — do the long route. Great Lawn perimeter before 9 AM gives the full midsummer view, Belvedere Castle to the north. Late-afternoon showers are possible, so favor the morning. The North Woods and the Loch are a quiet afternoon alternative.
Thu 6/18 — Thunderstorms; keep it short
85°F and thunderstorms likely — not a long-walk day. If there’s a dry morning window, the Reservoir track at sunrise is your best bet; otherwise save it. A private Starlight Dinner has Summit Rock 6–9 PM (no impact on the main paths).
Fri 6/19 — Juneteenth in Seneca Village
Juneteenth in Seneca Village (1–3 PM, West Drive near 82nd–86th St, with the Hunters’ Gate gathering on the western edge) is a commemorative walk in itself — the landscape you’re crossing was once a thriving community. Joining or arriving nearby beforehand is worthwhile. Warm at 85°F and breezy out of the west.
