Central Park Family Plans: Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Central Park Family Plans — Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Hi families — quick apology: this usually arrives Friday night and I’m a day behind, so here it is Saturday morning. Plenty of time, though — Model Yacht Racing and storytelling fill Saturday, the weather turns lovely and cool Monday–Wednesday (the best outing window in weeks), and Friday brings Juneteenth in Seneca Village, one of the best family history events on the calendar.
Weather this week
89°F Saturday, 88°F Sunday, 79°F Monday, 79°F Tuesday, 78°F Wednesday, 85°F Thursday (thunderstorms likely), 85°F Friday. For kids, this weekend means arrive by 9 AM and leave by noon; then Monday–Wednesday is comfortable all day in the upper 70s. Skip Thursday — thunderstorms most of the day.
Sat 6/13 — Model Yacht Racing + Storytelling at the Andersen statue + A Cappella
Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse (9 AM–3 PM) — RC sailboats on the circular Conservatory Water pond, with shade and benches nearby; get there before 11 AM ahead of the heat. Right alongside it, Storytelling in Central Park at the Hans Christian Andersen statue (10 AM) is made for little ones. In the afternoon, A Cappella in the Park at King Jagiello Plaza (1–5 PM) is free and family-friendly. The Croquet Championship wraps at Bowling Green too — fun for older kids to watch. East Meadow closed all day.
Sun 6/14 — Folk Dancers; east side busy with the parade
Central Park International Folk Dancers at King Jagiello Plaza (11 AM–9 PM) are colorful, participatory, and welcoming — come around 11 AM before the heat. One heads-up: the Puerto Rican Day Parade makes the east side and Central Park West sidewalk crowded through midday, so enter from the west or south. East Meadow is still closed; use North Meadow or the Great Lawn for open play, and plan to be home before the evening storms.
Mon 6/15 — Best day starts (79°F), Cherry Hill reopens
79°F and the cleanest air in weeks — the front of a great three-day stretch. Cherry Hill reopens (fountain and lawn back). Rowboats at the Loeb Boathouse are a perfect Monday outing in this weather. The 40-in-Focus photo exhibit opens at the Arsenal (9 AM–5 PM, free) — approachable for kids old enough to follow a picture story.
Tue 6/16 — Bowling Greens and Cedar Hill closed; easy 79°F day
Bowling Greens and Cedar Hill are closed for maintenance, and Levin Playground is wrapping up its closure (check the Conservancy site). Otherwise a clean, comfortable 79°F day — a great morning playground or boathouse outing.
Wed 6/17 — Wellness at the Park (Great Lawn, 9 AM–1 PM), 78°F
Wellness at the Park on the Great Lawn north side (9 AM–1 PM) — yoga and movement; families welcome to join the edge with a blanket. Coolest day of the week, so it’s a good all-morning park day; just watch for late-afternoon showers.
Thu 6/18 — Thunderstorms; indoor backup
85°F and thunderstorms likely — a day for an indoor plan or a short morning visit. Columbus Circle Food Market is open early if you want a quick provisioning stop before the rain.
Fri 6/19 — Juneteenth in Seneca Village, 1–3 PM
Juneteenth in Seneca Village (1–3 PM, West Drive, with a companion gathering at Hunters’ Gate) is the one to bring older kids to: Seneca Village was a thriving free Black community in the 1800s, displaced to build the park. It’s afternoon heat (85°F) and breezy, so bring water and sun cover.
