Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up — Sat Jun 13 – Fri Jun 19
Hey cyclists — apologies, this usually goes out Friday night and I’m a day behind, so here it is Saturday. It still lands in time for the one you really need to know: Sunday is a write-off on the east side. CRCA races East Drive at dawn and the Puerto Rican Day Parade takes the east side through midday. Saturday’s hot, then Monday–Wednesday turns gorgeous and cool — that’s your week.
Weather this week
89°F Saturday, 88°F Sunday, 79°F Monday, 79°F Tuesday, 78°F Wednesday, 85°F Thursday (thunderstorms likely), 85°F Friday. Hot and sunny through the weekend with Sunday-evening storms, then a beautiful upper-70s stretch Monday–Wednesday before Thursday’s thunderstorms. Save your long rides and intervals for the midweek cool-down.
Sat 6/13 — Clean drives, 89°F; Central Park 5K on the north cross drive 9 AM
No drive closures for the loop, but the Central Park 5K stages on the 102nd Street Cross Drive at 9 AM — give the north transverse a wide berth mid-morning. The Martinez Brothers SummerStage show (Rumsey, 6–10 PM) sends a pedestrian surge across East Drive near 72nd around 10:30 PM. Ride before 10 AM in the heat, or after the show clears. East Meadow closed all day.
Sun 6/14 — CRCA crit 5:30 AM, then Puerto Rican Day Parade on East Drive
The week’s big one. CRCA Central Park Racing Series owns East Drive from 5:30 AM — if you’re not racing it, that’s fast club traffic on the loop early; ride West Drive or wait it out. Then the Puerto Rican Day Parade stages and disperses across East Drive and the Central Park West sidewalk through midday, so the full loop is unreliable from mid-morning on. Get your laps before 7 AM or skip the loop entirely Sunday. Storms move in by evening.
Mon 6/15 — Best day starts here (79°F, clean loop)
Heat’s gone: 79°F, drying out, nothing on the drives. This is the front edge of the week’s good stretch — Monday through Wednesday is open, cool, and quiet. Long ride or intervals, your pick. 40-in-Focus opens at the Arsenal (9 AM); foot traffic at the Fifth Ave entrance stays off the drives.
Tue 6/16 — 79°F, drives clear
Another clean, cool one — mostly sunny, light wind. Bowling Greens, Cedar Hill, and Pilgrim Hill closed for maintenance, all off the loop. Julius Caesar foot traffic near 100th & West Drive builds after 4:30 PM; the 40-in-Focus opening reception (Arsenal, 6–8 PM) draws pedestrians to Fifth Ave, not the drives.
Wed 6/17 — 78°F, drives open, last cool day
Coolest day of the week — take the long ride before the weather turns. Showers possible late afternoon, so go morning or midday. Wellness at the Park (9 AM–1 PM, Great Lawn) is off the drives.
Thu 6/18 — 85°F, thunderstorms likely
Genuinely wet — thunderstorms are the call. Dawn ride before the cells build, or rest day. Roads will be slick if you do get out.
Fri 6/19 — 85°F, breezy, Juneteenth on West Drive 1–3 PM
Juneteenth in Seneca Village puts a permit on West Drive near 82nd–86th Street, 1–3 PM, plus the Hunters’ Gate gathering on the western edge — pedestrian presence and possible staging in that stretch. Ride the morning, be off West Drive before noon. West wind 12–15 mph means a headwind on the west side climbs and a push down the east.
Quick recap
- Sun 6/14: avoid the loop — CRCA crit East Drive 5:30 AM, Puerto Rican Day Parade east side through midday. Laps before 7 AM only.
- Sat 6/13: Central Park 5K on the 102nd St Cross Drive 9 AM; SummerStage surge near 72nd from 10:30 PM.
- Mon–Wed: the week — 78–79°F, full loop, no conflicts. Long rides go here.
- Thu 6/18: thunderstorms likely — dawn or skip.
- Fri 6/19: Juneteenth on West Drive 1–3 PM — morning ride only.
