Central Park Picnic Guide: Sat Jun 6 – Fri Jun 12
Central Park Picnic Guide — Sat Jun 6 – Fri Jun 12
Hey picnickers — the NY Philharmonic Great Lawn picnic on Wednesday is the event of the week: bring the full spread and arrive by 5 PM. Tuesday’s Naumburg concert is the ideal blanket-and-bottle setup. The East Meadow is closed Saturday and Sunday; the Great Lawn is open all week until Wednesday afternoon pre-event setup.
Weather this week
93°F Saturday, 87°F Sunday, 79°F Monday, 85°F Tuesday, 90°F Wednesday, 92°F Thursday and Friday. Late-morning arrivals (before 11 AM) and evening events are your picnic windows. Sun cover is essential for anything past noon; the heat is real.
Sat 6/6 — East Meadow closed; Cherry Hill, Cedar Hill, or Sheep Meadow (93°F)
East Meadow is closed all day Saturday. Move to:
- Cherry Hill (mid-park, near 72nd Street boathouse) — shaded edges, water view.
- Cedar Hill (east side, near 75th Street) — open, breezy, lower foot traffic.
- Sheep Meadow — open for unstructured use, no permits visible this week.
- Mineral Springs Lawn — near 69th Street, west side; Columbus Circle Food Market is nearby.
The Mastercard Mini 10K runs East Drive 8–10:30 AM — arrive via the west side if you’re heading to Cherry Hill or Sheep Meadow early. The Sing for Hope Choir Fest at The Dairy (12–3 PM) and Tango at Shakespeare Statue (6–9 PM) add ambient entertainment near your picnic if you’re staying into the afternoon and evening.
Sun 6/7 — Cherry Hill in the afternoon (87°F)
Sicily. Lands in Hands occupies Cherry Hill 10 AM–1 PM — plan your spot for after 1 PM if Cherry Hill is your target. East Meadow closure carries over. Cedar Hill (east side, 75th Street) is the cleanest uncrowded Sunday option. 87°F — set up in shade; keep early and late as your windows.
Mon 6/8 — Great Lawn picnic day (79°F)
The week’s best picnic day. 79°F, Great Lawn wide open, no competing events until the Bandshell rave at 3 PM. Set up anywhere on the Great Lawn by 10 AM. The DJ Ali Bandshell Rave actually pairs well — walk over from the Great Lawn when it starts and listen from the edges of the Bandshell lawn.
Tue 6/9 — Naumburg Bandshell picnic dinner (7:30 PM concert)
This is the week’s curated picnic-music pairing: bring dinner to the Naumburg Bandshell area, set up on the grass by 6:30–7 PM, and enjoy Baroklyn, Simone Dinnerstein & CONCORA starting at 7:30 PM. The Bandshell lawn is surrounded by old plane trees — reasonably shaded and cooler than open areas at 85°F. Blanket, bottle of wine, the whole thing.
Wed 6/10 — NY Philharmonic at the Great Lawn: the year’s best picnic occasion (8 PM)
This is it. The NY Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks on the Great Lawn (8 PM, free) is New York’s signature summer picnic occasion. Tens of thousands of people bring full spreads — elaborate charcuterie, real wineglasses, full table setups on the lawn. Arrive by 5 PM to secure your spot; by 7 PM the lawn is at capacity. Plan for: sun protection until 7 PM, a full dinner, something comfortable to sit on, and patience getting in and out.
Thu 6/11 — North Meadow or Cedar Hill (92°F)
The Great Lawn is recovering from the NY Phil crowd. North Meadow (north end of the park) offers open lawn access away from the SummerStage concert crowd at Rumsey Playfield (Yellowcard, 6–10 PM). Cedar Hill (east side) is also reliable. Morning picnics only in 92°F heat.
Fri 6/12 — Arsenal exhibit in the morning, Salsa at the Bandshell in the evening
40-in-Focus exhibit opens at the Arsenal (9 AM–5 PM, free) — good for a morning cultural stop before the heat peaks. Carlos Konig Salsa at Bandshell Plaza (5–8 PM) turns the Bandshell lawn into a Friday evening social. Bring a late-afternoon picnic and listen from the grass — a pleasantly low-key end to the week. Columbus Circle Food Market is also running Friday if you want to pick up supplies near the park.
