Central Park Guide for Theater Fans — Mon May 25 – Sun May 31
Hey theater fans,
Two outdoor Shakespeare productions kick off the summer this week. Julius Caesar runs daily at The Pool 10 AM (NY Classical Theatre, free) Mon–Sun, and Barefoot Shakespeare debuts their June 2026 show at Summit Rock Thursday 3 PM, with repeat performances Friday and Saturday. Delacorte (Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park) season hasn’t been announced yet — when it is, it’ll headline the week it lands.
Weather this week
Stormy Memorial Day (rain, 84% precip) cancels Monday’s outdoor performance. Tue–Sun is dry and beautiful — Wednesday peaks at 83°F, the rest 77–80°F with cool evenings. Thursday 3 PM at Summit Rock will be hot in direct sun — bring water; the venue has some shade but not all seating.
Mon May 25 (Memorial Day) — washout, no theater outdoors
Thunderstorms, 74°F. Julius Caesar’s Monday performance is at risk — NY Classical Theatre cancels rain dates without notice; check their site before heading out. The Arsenal Gallery is showing Sarah Yuster: Outside Voices (free, 9 AM, third floor of the Arsenal building) — a visual-arts adjacent indoor pivot if you want something cultural.
Tue May 26 — Julius Caesar officially opens at The Pool
80°F partly sunny. NY Classical Theatre’s Julius Caesar at The Pool, 10 AM — first dry-weather performance of the run. The Pool venue is the small lake in the northwest quadrant; bring something to sit on, arrive 15 minutes early for a decent spot. Runs daily through Sunday May 31.
Wed May 27 — heat day, Julius Caesar 10 AM (Corporate Challenge race night 1 of 2)
83°F mostly sunny. Julius Caesar at The Pool 10 AM — morning performance is well-timed; venue stays in tree-shade through noon. After the show is the heat of the day; plan an indoor lunch. Heads-up: J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge race night 1 of 2, 6:45 PM start — not theater, but it closes East Drive 5–10 PM if you’re heading to an evening show on that side.
Thu May 28 — Barefoot Shakespeare opens at Summit Rock 3 PM + Julius Caesar (race night 2 of 2)
80°F mostly sunny. Barefoot Shakespeare Presents Our June 2026 Show at Summit Rock, 3 PM — debut performance of the run. Corporate Challenge race night 2 of 2, 6:45 PM start — East Drive closed 5–10 PM, same as Wednesday; plan your route accordingly if the show runs long. Summit Rock is the high point of the west side at 83rd Street, the highest natural elevation in Manhattan. The Barefoot Shakespeare format is full company, ensemble music, audience seated on the rock. This is the most photographable Shakespeare in the park this season. Julius Caesar at The Pool 10 AM also continues.
Fri May 29 — double bill: Julius Caesar + Barefoot Shakespeare
78°F mostly sunny. Julius Caesar at The Pool 10 AM (morning) and Barefoot Shakespeare at Summit Rock 3 PM (afternoon) — you can pair them with a slow walk from The Pool north to Summit Rock for a true Shakespeare-day in the park. Maria Benvenuto at Cop Cot 6 PM is a small acoustic that closes out the evening nicely if you’re in the south end.
Sat May 30 — Saturday triple-bill
77°F mostly sunny — the most beautiful day of the week. Julius Caesar 10 AM at The Pool, Barefoot Shakespeare 3 PM at Summit Rock (final performance of this opening run), plus Griffin’s Tale at Pilgrim Hill 12 PM — a storytelling-format pop-up performance tagged Theater-adjacent. East Meadow is closed all weekend, but Pool, Summit Rock, and Pilgrim Hill are all clear of weekend logistics.
Sun May 31 — Julius Caesar closes at The Pool
74°F partly sunny. Julius Caesar at The Pool 10 AM — closing performance of the seven-day run. If you’ve been meaning to catch it, this is your last chance. Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM is a Concerts & Performances entry but not theater; you can hit Julius Caesar first and walk south for the Folkdancers afterward.
