Central Park Guide for Runners — Mon May 25 – Sun May 31
Hey runners,
The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge is the week’s anchor — and 2026 is a two-night event, Wednesday May 27 and Thursday May 28, 6:45 PM start each evening, with staging trucks at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza all five weekdays (Mon → Fri). Wrap that with a wet Memorial Day washout and you’ve got clean run windows only on Tue and Fri/weekend. The good news: Tue → Sun is a beautiful stretch once Monday’s storms clear.
Weather this week
Wet, stormy Memorial Day (74°F, 84% precip) gives way to a beautiful Tue–Sun: dry, partly-to-mostly sunny, Wednesday peaking at 83°F, the rest of the week in the upper 70s. Tuesday morning is your cleanest long-run window of the week; Wed AND Thu, get out by 6 AM or wait until after 9 PM when the Corporate Challenge clears each evening.
Mon May 25 (Memorial Day) — washout + staging begins
Showers and thunderstorms, 74°F, 84% precip. Corporate Challenge staging trucks arrive at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza, taking lane space on West Drive in the 70s. Combined with rain, this is a treadmill day for most people — if you go out, the south end is the constrained zone, and the Reservoir + Bridle Path are your cleanest options.
Tue May 26 — clean morning, the best run day of the week
80°F, partly sunny, dry. First clean day post-storms — the loop is open, footing is solid, and the staging footprint is small. This is your long-run morning. Corporate Challenge staging continues at South Dead Road but doesn’t take the road. Run any time of day, but morning is sweetest.
Wed May 27 — race night 1 of 2, 6:45 PM start
83°F mostly sunny, the warmest day of the week. Corporate Challenge race night 1: 6:45 PM start, 3.5-mile course on the loop. East Drive in the 60s–70s is unusable 5–10 PM. Run before 6 AM (cooler too), or after 9 PM once the road clears. The Bandshell Plaza side is the spectator vantage.
Thu May 28 — race night 2 of 2, slight chance of late showers
80°F mostly sunny, slight chance of late-day showers. Corporate Challenge race night 2: 6:45 PM start — same closure window as Wednesday, East Drive 60s–70s unusable 5–10 PM. Morning is yours; pre-dawn is cleanest. Avoid the loop 5–10 PM. No other loop events on the day.
Fri May 29 — open road, food market at Merchants’ Gate
78°F mostly sunny. Loop is yours. Columbus Circle Food Market sets up at Merchants’ Gate 9:30 AM — adds foot traffic to the southwest corner if you’re entering there; otherwise no impact. Front Runners-style speed work at the Reservoir track has a clean shot.
Sat May 30 — CRCA crit at 4 AM + NYRR Open Run at the Great Lawn
77°F mostly sunny, the prettiest weekday-quality day on a weekend. Heads-up: CRCA Central Park Racing Series crit on East Drive 4–7 AM (cyclists, not runners, but if you’re out for a dawn run on East Drive, expect the peloton lap-traffic — bridle path is your friend). NYRR Open Run at the Great Lawn 8 AM — free, no-reg 5K loop. East Meadow is closed. Otherwise a perfect Saturday.
Sun May 31 — clean, folkdancers at King Jagiello
74°F partly sunny. Central Park International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM — south end foot traffic but off-loop. East Meadow remains closed. The loop is yours; long run, recovery run, whatever you’ve got.
Marathon countdown — training season is 5 weeks out
NYC Marathon is Sunday November 1, 2026 — 23 weeks from today. Most 18-week training plans kick off Sunday June 28, so we’re now ~5 weeks from the start. Expect more runners on the loop starting late June as Front Runners NY, North Brooklyn, NYRR’s official plan, and the big training groups start their Saturday long runs. We’ll do a fuller breakdown — group meet-up points and Saturday windows — closer to plan start. For now, just a heads-up: the quiet stretches you’re enjoying right now thin out in July.
