Central Park Guide for Cyclists — Mon May 25 – Sun May 31
Hey cyclists,
The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge owns Wed AND Thu evenings — 2026 is a two-night event, 6:45 PM start each evening, 3.5-mile course, with staging trucks at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza Mon → Fri. Memorial Day washes out; CRCA crit kicks off Saturday at 4 AM. The clean lap days this week are Tuesday morning and Friday — Thursday gets the second race night.
Weather this week
Stormy Memorial Day (74°F, 84% precip) clearing into a beautiful Tue–Sun stretch, Wednesday peaking at 83°F mostly sunny, the rest of the week 77–80°F partly-to-mostly sunny with low precip. Skip Monday’s wet roads, ride Tuesday morning hard, and on Wed AND Thu get your laps in before 6 AM or write the evening off after 5 PM (both race nights).
Mon May 25 (Memorial Day) — wet, staging begins
Showers and thunderstorms all day, 74°F. Corporate Challenge staging trucks arrive at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza — lane impact on West Drive in the 70s, though wet pavement is the bigger reason to stay off the loop today. Indoor trainer or a coffee ride.
Tue May 26 — your cleanest lap day
80°F partly sunny, dry, no events on the loop. First clean ride day post-storms. Staging footprint at South Dead Road continues but doesn’t take the road. This is the long ride or the hard intervals day — go early before the work-from-home walker volume picks up around 9 AM.
Wed May 27 — race night 1 of 2, loop closed 5–10 PM
83°F mostly sunny, the warmest day of the week. Corporate Challenge race night 1, 6:45 PM start: East Drive in the 60s–70s is closed to all traffic 5–10 PM, with staging trucks parked at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza since Monday. Pre-dawn (before 6 AM) is the clean window — heat is mild and the road is yours. Anything after work is a no-go until 10 PM.
Thu May 28 — race night 2 of 2, same closure window
80°F mostly sunny, slight chance of late-day showers. Corporate Challenge race night 2, 6:45 PM start — East Drive in the 60s–70s closed 5–10 PM, same as Wednesday. Pre-dawn or post-10 PM only on the loop. Morning is clean; watch the radar for any late-day cells too.
Fri May 29 — clean, food market at Merchants’ Gate
78°F mostly sunny. Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate from 9:30 AM — adds pedestrian volume to the Merchants’ Gate corner, slow your line there. Loop is otherwise yours.
Sat May 30 — CRCA Central Park Racing Series, your morning is the race
77°F mostly sunny. CRCA Central Park Racing Series crit on East Drive, 4–7 AM — race traffic, lap-traffic peloton, the works. If you’re in it, you know. If you’re not racing, push your ride to 8 AM or later — by then it’s clear and the weather is perfect for a long Saturday loop. Also that morning: NYRR Open Run at the Great Lawn 8 AM (5K runners, off-loop but adds Great Lawn foot traffic). East Meadow is closed all weekend.
Sun May 31 — open road, gentle Folkdancer crowd at the south end
74°F partly sunny. Central Park International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM — south-end pedestrian volume, off-loop. East Meadow remains closed. This is your recovery-long-ride day; the loop is open.
