Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri May 22 – Thu May 28
Central Park Running Heads-Up: Fri May 22 – Thu May 28
Hey runners,
The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge closes the loop Wednesday evening — ~15,000 runners on a 3.5-mile evening race roughly 6–9 PM, with staging at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza Mon, Tue, AND Wed. That’s the headline of the week; plan your Mon–Wed runs around it and treat the rest of the calendar as bonus context.
Weather this week
Wet and cool through the weekend — Sat full rain, Sun thunderstorms — then a warming Memorial Day with lingering showers, dry-out Tuesday, and Wednesday peaking at 85°F, the warmest day of the week. Tue and Wed early-morning are your best long-run windows; on Wed in particular, get out by 6 AM or wait until after 9 PM when the Corporate Challenge clears.
Fri May 22 — transition day, Mindtravel sets up at the Bandshell
Cool, cloudy, possible AM showers. Mindtravel “Silent” Piano at the Bandshell 7 PM — silent-disco style, audience on headphones, but the Bandshell Plaza staging from late afternoon adds foot traffic at West Drive ~72nd. Easy to navigate, just slow your line past the plaza if you’re running south after 4 PM.
Sat May 23 — full rain day, run if you must
58°F and rain all day. The good news for the loop: most weekend foot traffic stays home. Skate Circle at Dead Road North is on the calendar 2–7 PM but cancels in steady rain; That Guitar Man at Hernshead and Salsa Dura at the Bandshell may also flex. Effectively a clean loop for anyone willing to get wet — Reservoir cinder gets slick, so stick to the drives.
Sun May 24 — storms likely, plan around the radar
62°F with thunderstorms in the forecast. Folkdancers at King Jagiełło 11 AM–7 PM is off-loop (Turtle Pond east side). Morning run before the storms is the play — by early afternoon lightning risk is real on the exposed Reservoir and upper loop. If you miss the morning window, treat this as a rest day.
Mon May 25 (Memorial Day) — Corporate Challenge staging begins
74°F, rain showers likely. Corporate Challenge setup at South Dead Road + Bandshell Plaza all day — trucks, fencing, and finish-line build-out. The loop itself is open for running, but expect congestion on West Drive between 66th and the Bandshell, and the 72nd Street Cross Drive will start narrowing as staging trailers arrive. Use the bridle path or the mid-park transverses (66th, 79th, 86th, 96th) for any out-and-back if the south end looks tight.
Tue May 26 — Corporate Challenge crowds building, otherwise dry
80°F, mostly cloudy. Best long-run day of the week if you go early. Corporate Challenge staging deepens at South Dead Road — runners-village fencing extends, expo build-out starts. The loop remains rideable/runnable but south end gets cluttered after 3 PM as race-day logistics ramp. Dawn through mid-morning is clean; the Reservoir loop and the bridle path are unaffected all day.
Wed May 27 — race occupies the loop ~6–9 PM
85°F, partly sunny — warmest day of the week, and race day. The Corporate Challenge field of ~15,000 takes over the loop in the evening. East Drive and the south half are unusable roughly 6–9 PM; staging crowds at Bandshell Plaza all afternoon. Get out before 7 AM for a long run in cooler air, or wait until after 9 PM when the loop reopens and the heat has dropped. Mid-day running in 85°F sun with race-build crowds at the south end is the worst of both worlds — pick a window. Bridle path, Reservoir, and the 102nd Street transverse stay clean even during the race itself if you need a steady-effort backup.
Thu May 28 — Corporate Challenge Day 4 still on the loop, perfect-temp morning
Corporate Challenge Day 4 keeps the loop occupied in the evening — the permit’s tagged Affects Loop, and Thu is the wind-down / Night 2 of the multi-night race format, so plan on the south half being unusable again 6–9 PM. The flip side: 80°F and sunny is the best running-temp day of the week outside of Wed’s heat. Get out pre-7 AM for any long effort — cool, dry, and an empty loop. If you bailed on Wednesday because of the race, Thursday morning is your cleanup window before the loop refills again at dusk. Bridle path and Reservoir stay clean all day as backup.
Quick recap
Wed 5/27 evening — Corporate Challenge owns the loop 6–9 PM Go before 7 AM or after 9 PM. 85°F midday is the worst pairing.
Mon–Tue — staging at South Dead Road, south end congested Bridle path / Reservoir / transverses if it’s tight.
Tue 5/26 — best long-run weather of the week Dry and 80°F. Go early.
Sat 5/23 — full rain, but a quiet loop Drives stay rideable; Reservoir cinder will be slick.
Sun 5/24 — morning before the storms Lightning risk on the Reservoir by afternoon.
Thu 5/28 — Day 4 loop occupation, 80°F sunny morning Pre-7 AM is the cleanup window if you missed Wed. Bridle path / Reservoir backup all day.
