Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Fri May 22 – Thu May 28
Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Fri May 22 – Thu May 28
Hey cyclists,
The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge takes the loop Wednesday evening — ~15,000 runners, 3.5-mile course, roughly 6–9 PM — with staging trucks parked at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza Mon, Tue, AND Wed. That’s the planning anchor of the week. Layer in a wet Sat–Sun and you’ve got a narrow ride window: Tuesday morning is the clean lap day.
Weather this week
Cool and wet through the weekend — Sat full rain, Sun thunderstorms — warming Memorial Day with lingering showers, dry-out Tuesday, and Wednesday topping out at 85°F partly sunny. Skip the weekend, ride Tue morning hard, and on Wed get out by sunrise or write the day off after 6 PM.
Fri May 22 — transition, watch the radar
Cool with possible morning showers and a clearing trend later. No loop events. Mindtravel “Silent” Piano at the Bandshell 7 PM is on headphones — no PA spillage onto the road — but Bandshell Plaza will have audience build-up from 6 PM, so slow your line on West Drive in the 70s for the evening laps. Otherwise an open loop.
Sat May 23 — rest day, full rain
58°F and rain all day. Skip it. The CRCA crit isn’t scheduled, the weekend social rides will scrub, and the loop pavement plus wet manhole covers in the 90s on West Drive isn’t worth the crash risk. Heads-up if you ride elsewhere: the NYRR Open Run at Astoria Park is on the calendar Sat 8 AM — that’s in Queens at Astoria Park, NOT Central Park, but worth noting if you mix run/ride and were thinking of a Saturday crossover.
Sun May 24 — storms likely, write it off
62°F with thunderstorms in the forecast. Folkdancers at King Jagiełło and Skate Circle at Dead Road North are on the books but weather-dependent. Lightning on the exposed loop is a non-starter — if you ride, it’s a dawn lap before the system arrives, and even that’s a coin flip. Treat Sunday as a second rest day and save the legs for Tuesday.
Mon May 25 (Memorial Day) — Corporate Challenge staging begins, showers
74°F with rain showers likely. Corporate Challenge setup goes in at South Dead Road and Bandshell Plaza all day — fencing, finish-line truss, runners-village staging. The loop is technically open but the south end gets cluttered with trucks and event crew, and crosswalks at 66th, 72nd, and the Bandshell will have spotters and barriers going up. Slow line everywhere south of 81st. If the morning rain breaks, an early lap before staging deepens is the play; otherwise wait for Tuesday.
Tue May 26 — best ride window of the week
80°F, mostly cloudy, dry. This is your day. Corporate Challenge staging continues but the loop itself is still rideable — go before 9 AM and you’ll have the cleanest pavement of the week. Long ride, intervals, group day, whatever you’ve been holding. South-end congestion builds through the afternoon as expo build-out finalizes, so morning is materially better than evening. By 4 PM the runners-village fence-line is on West Drive and your line through Columbus Circle / Merchants’ Gate tightens.
Wed May 27 — race occupies the loop ~6–9 PM
85°F, partly sunny — and race day. The Corporate Challenge field of ~15,000 runners takes over the loop in the evening. East Drive and the south half are closed to cyclists roughly 6–9 PM while the race is live, with staging crowds spilling onto the loop all afternoon. Ride windows: sunrise to ~10 AM is clean, midday is hot and increasingly crowded with race build-out, and after ~9 PM the loop reopens once sweep clears. If you wanted a hard effort this week and missed Tuesday, the early Wednesday window with cool morning air is your second chance. If you’re a post-9 PM rider, headlights and dim-pavement caution — race litter and cones may still be coming down.
Thu May 28 — Corporate Challenge Day 4 still occupies the loop, best ride-temp day
Corporate Challenge Day 4 keeps the loop occupied in the evening — the permit’s tagged Affects Loop, and Thu is the wind-down / Night 2 of the multi-night format, so the south half is again unusable roughly 6–9 PM. The trade is 80°F sunny dry air — the best riding-temp day of the week after Wed’s heat dropped a few degrees. Morning rides only. Pre-7 AM you’ll get the cleanest pavement and the coolest air of the week; if you skipped Tuesday or Wednesday because of the race, Thursday morning is your make-up window before the loop refills again at dusk. After dark, the loop nominally reopens once race-night sweep clears — same headlight / debris caution as Wed.
