Central Park Walking Plans: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Hi walkers,
Sunday-evening edition, looking at the week starting tomorrow. Thursday and Friday will be the best walking days of the month — cool, post-storm, no events. Memorial Day Saturday brings a wet south-end stack; Monday/Tuesday’s heat means early or evening walks only.
Weather this week
Hot and sunny through Tuesday with Tuesday peaking at 93°F, Wednesday-evening thunderstorms, then cool and damp Thursday onward with rain showers likely Saturday and chance of rain Sunday. Plan early-morning or post-7-PM walks Mon–Tue; Thursday and Friday will be the best walking weather of the week.
Mon May 18 — Bethesda party 6–9 PM, otherwise calm
Hot day (86°F) so walk early or after dinner. Bethesda Fountain Terrace has a private party 6–9 PM — beautiful from the upper terrace overlook, busy below.
Tue May 19 — 93°F, no events, heat is the obstacle
Pre-9 AM or post-7 PM. The Ramble, North Woods, and the Mall’s elm-shaded stretch stay cooler than open paths.
Wed May 20 — morning walks, storms after 4 PM
The storms over the Reservoir are beautiful from a covered Engineers’ Gate vantage — Wednesday evening is the year’s first real lightning weather. Don’t get caught on the loop when they fire.
Thu May 21 – Fri May 22 — the magic days
70°F then 66°F. No events. Empty paths. Cool, possibly misty. Best walking weather of the month.
One recommended walk: Conservatory Garden → Harlem Meer → North Woods → Ravine → Loch → exit at North Meadow. About 90 minutes, fully calm, post-storm waterfalls running. Pick Thursday or Friday morning.
Friday brings the Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate (9:30 AM–9 PM) — easy lunch stop on a south-end walk.
Sat May 23 — south end stacked + rain
Rain showers likely all day, 65°F. The south end still fills with weekend events despite rain — though rain will thin most:
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM
- That Guitar Man at Hernshead, noon–6 PM (Lake-side guitar)
- Salsa Dura Social at Bandshell, 5–7:30 PM — first Bandshell concert of the season
- Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM–9 PM
- Mineral Springs party, 3–6 PM
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs, 9 AM–3 PM (rain-dependent)
- East Meadow closed
The Ramble in light rain is unmatched — birdsong subdued, the woods feel bigger, the Lake reflects nothing. With rain gear, Saturday is a walking day worth keeping.
Sun May 24 — Folkdancers, Skate Circle, Mineral Springs picnic
71°F, chance of rain.
- Folkdancers at King Jagiallo, 11 AM–7 PM
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM
- Mineral Springs picnic, noon–5 PM
- Food Market continues at Merchants’ Gate
- East Meadow closed
Morning is calm; afternoon south end is busy.
Scenic-spot ceremonies this week
Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, Belvedere Castle Terrace, Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Cop Cot, Ladies’ Pavilion — small private ceremonies sprinkled through the week, mostly midday. For solitude at these spots, walk Thu or Fri morning.
