Central Park Running Heads-Up: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Central Park Running Heads-Up: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Hey runners,
Sunday-evening edition, looking ahead to the week starting tomorrow. No races or organized rides on the loop all week — but Memorial Day weekend brings heavy south-end foot traffic, and Tuesday’s 93°F is going to be the first real heat day of the year.
Weather this week
Hot and sunny through Tuesday — Mon 86°F, Tue peaking at 93°F — then Wednesday-evening thunderstorms, cool damp Thu–Sat, and rain showers chance Sun. Front-load long runs Monday morning before the Tuesday heat peak; Thursday and Friday are the cool-weather makeup window; Saturday will likely be wet.
Mon May 18 — early morning, then back off
86°F. Run before 8 AM for cleanest air. Small note: Bethesda Fountain Terrace party 6–9 PM — minor pedestrian spill onto 72nd Cross Drive at the Bethesda underpass that evening, easy to navigate.
Tue May 19 — 93°F, no events, but heat is the obstacle
The hottest day of the year so far. Run before 7 AM or skip. No events on the loop, so the only thing you’re fighting is the heat. Reservoir at dawn — cherry tree shade on the east side — is the move. Bring water.
Wed May 20 — storms incoming, morning is the window
Hot morning (high 80s), thunderstorms by late afternoon. Morning run, then home. Avoid exposed Reservoir/loop sections in the evening when lightning fires.
Thu May 21 – Fri May 22 — the makeup window, no events
70°F then 66°F. Best running stretch of the week. No races, no path closures. One small thing: Columbus Circle Food Market opens Thu and runs through Sun at Merchants’ Gate (9:30 AM–9 PM, holiday weekend extension). Enter the park at 72nd or above to skip the SW entrance bottleneck on those days.
Also Thu: small event at Mineral Springs, 5–7 PM. Not blocking paths.
Sat May 23 — Memorial Day weekend opens, south end stacks up
Rain showers likely all day, ~65°F. No CRCA crit racing this Saturday (Memorial Day skip). But six events fill the south end regardless of weather:
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM — West Drive at 72nd jammed (cancels in heavy rain)
- That Guitar Man at Hernshead, noon–6 PM — foot traffic on West Drive 75th–78th
- Salsa Dura Social at Bandshell, 5–7:30 PM — Bandshell sits on West Drive, audience spills onto the path
- Columbus Circle Food Market, Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM–9 PM
- Mineral Springs party, 3–6 PM
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs, 9 AM–3 PM (rain-dependent)
- East Meadow closed
Plan a morning run before these fire up, or stay above 86th in the afternoon. Reservoir and upper park stay clean all day.
Sun May 24 — Memorial Day Sunday, similar pattern
71°F, chance of rain showers.
- Folkdancers at King Jagiallo, 11 AM–7 PM (Turtle Pond east — not a loop issue)
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM
- Mineral Springs picnic, noon–5 PM
- Food Market at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM–9 PM
- East Meadow closed
Morning is clean. Afternoon south end is busy. Same playbook as Saturday.
