Central Park Nature Notes: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Central Park Nature Notes: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Hello nature lovers,
Sunday-evening edition, looking at the week starting tomorrow. The heat will end peony peak by Tuesday, Wednesday’s storms will refresh the Ravine, and Thursday–Friday cool mornings will be the year’s best dawn-birding window. No big nature events scheduled this week — the natural park itself is the program.
Weather this week
Hot and sunny through Tuesday (peaking 93°F), thunderstorms Wednesday evening, cool and damp Thursday on with rain likely Saturday and chance of rain Sunday. The heat will push peonies past peak by Tuesday; Wednesday’s storms will turn the Ravine waterfalls back to full flow; Thursday and Friday cool mornings will be the best dawn-listening of the spring.
Mon May 18 morning — bloom urgency
Get to the Conservatory Garden tomorrow morning for peonies. With 86°F Monday then 93°F Tuesday, this is the last good viewing window — peonies don’t tolerate heat well. Morning visit before 10 AM while the dew is still on.
Also still in bloom:
- Mountain laurel across the Ramble and along North Woods paths (peak now)
- Catalpa trees (broad fragrant white flowers) around the Reservoir and Hallett — peak this week
- Late irises filling in at the Conservatory Garden — picking up as peonies fade
Tue May 19 — 93°F, stay in the canopy
The Ramble is the coolest place in the park — heavy canopy, water nearby. Pre-7-AM is the only practical birding window. Listen for any late migrants still moving (Blackpoll, Wilson’s, Connecticut). After Tuesday it’s full resident-summer-bird repertoire.
Wed May 20 — front day, storms restore the Ravine
Hot morning, thunderstorms late afternoon. By Thursday morning the Loch and Cascade in the Ravine will be running full — easily the best Ravine viewing of the year.
Thu May 21 – Fri May 22 — the magic mornings
70°F then 66°F. Cool, possibly misty in the Ramble. This is the best dawn-walk weather we’ll get this season. Birds active and visible, comfortable temperatures, soft light. Pick Thursday or Friday morning, go to the Ramble or North Woods, give it 90 minutes.
A specific recommendation: Conservatory Garden → Harlem Meer → North Woods → Ravine → Loch. About 90 minutes, fully calm, post-storm waterfalls running.
Sat May 23 — rain, and that’s a feature
Rain showers likely all day, 65°F. The Ramble in light rain is a religious experience — the woods feel doubled in size, the rain on the leaves is the soundtrack, the Lake reflects nothing. If you have rain gear, this is a Saturday worth walking.
The south end fills with weekend events (Skate Circle, That Guitar Man, Salsa Dura at Bandshell, Food Market, Mineral Springs picnic, Model Yacht) but none reach the Ramble or North Woods.
Sun May 24 — Memorial Day Sunday, head north
71°F, chance of rain. Folkdancers at King Jagiallo and Skate Circle at Dead Road North fill the south end. Stay north of 86th for quiet — Conservatory Garden, Harlem Meer, North Woods, Ravine, Hallett. Crowds don’t penetrate past the Reservoir.
What to watch this week
- Peonies done by Wednesday. Iris and allium take over at Conservatory Garden.
- Ravine waterfalls at full strength Thurs–Sat after Wednesday’s storms.
- Last late warbler chances Mon–Tue dawn. After that, resident-only.
