Central Park Family Plans: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Central Park Family Plans: Mon May 18 – Sun May 24
Hi families,
Sunday-evening edition, looking at the week starting tomorrow. Memorial Day Saturday is the big family day — five kid-friendly events stacked in one afternoon. The weekday week is quiet except for Tuesday’s heat.
Weather this week
Hot and sunny through Tuesday — Mon 86°F, Tue peaking at 93°F — then thunderstorms Wednesday evening, cool damp Thu–Sun with rain likely Saturday. Hydrate the kids hard Mon–Tue; have an indoor Plan B ready for Saturday.
Mon May 18 — quiet day, heat-aware
86°F. Mornings or after dinner outside. Heat-day kid picks:
- Zoo — opens 10 AM, mostly shaded
- Marionette Theatre at Swedish Cottage — indoor, air-conditioned (check their schedule)
- Conservatory Water model boat pond — shaded by trees
Tue May 19 — 93°F, indoor or evening day
The heat day. The Zoo is your friend (shaded paths, indoor exhibits). Marionette Theatre is air-conditioned. If you go to a playground, mornings before 10 AM or evenings after 6 PM only. Heckscher Playground sprinklers may help if they’re running.
Wed May 20 — morning’s still hot, storms in the evening
Aim for early activities. Get home before late afternoon thunderstorms.
Thu May 21 – Fri May 22 — best park weather of the week
70°F then 66°F. No scheduled family events, so this is unstructured kid time: playgrounds, the zoo, picnics, walking the bridges. Best family-walking weather all week.
Friday: Columbus Circle Food Market opens at Merchants’ Gate (9:30 AM–9 PM) — easy lunch or snack stop on a Friday park visit.
Sat May 23 — the big family day (weather pending)
Five kid-friendly events scheduled, though rain may shift things:
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM — kids love it; cancels in steady rain
- Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM–9 PM — covered stalls, runs in any weather
- That Guitar Man at Hernshead, noon–6 PM — Lake-side guitar, sing-alongs (rain-dependent)
- Mineral Springs picnic + party (10 AM–6 PM) — community gathering
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM — fun to watch, music, energy (cancels in rain)
- Salsa Dura Social at Bandshell Plaza, 5–7:30 PM — kids welcome, first Bandshell concert of the season
East Meadow is closed all day — picnic elsewhere.
If the rain holds off the morning: Model boats at Kerbs at 9 AM is the play. Indoor Plan B: Marionette Theatre, the Zoo, or a Met-side day.
Sun May 24 — Memorial Day Sunday
71°F, chance of rain showers.
- Folkdancers at King Jagiallo, 11 AM–7 PM — costumed dancers, live music, kid-friendly
- Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM
- Mineral Springs picnic, noon–5 PM
- Food Market continues at Merchants’ Gate
- East Meadow closed
Could be the better outdoor day of the weekend.
