Central Park Nature Notes: Week of May 10–16
Central Park Nature Notes: Week of May 10–16
Hello nature lovers,
We’re at the tail end of peak spring warbler migration — these next 7–10 days are the last reliable window before things settle into resident-bird summer mode. The week is quiet event-wise; nature has center stage. Here’s the rundown.
Migration is still happening — go birding
Late migrants are still moving through. The Ramble and North Woods are your spots. First-light starts are still the best by a wide margin. Expect to see:
- Lingering warblers: Blackburnian, Magnolia, Canada, Mourning, American Redstart
- Catbirds and thrushes settling in for summer
- Baltimore Orioles fully arrived — listen for them in the cottonwoods near Turtle Pond
By next weekend the diversity will drop sharply. Get out there this week.
Quiet spots, undisturbed all week
These places have nothing scheduled — perfect for slow walks and birding:
- Conservatory Garden (105th & 5th) — late tulips, early peonies, completely calm
- The Ramble — prime birding
- Hallett Nature Sanctuary — small, magical, check posted hours
- North Woods & Ravine — peak waterfall flow after spring rains
- Strawberry Fields — except today (Mother’s Day crowds)
Today (Sun May 10) — Mother’s Day means south-end crowds
Avoid Bethesda, Bow Bridge, Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove today — they’ll be saturated with families and ceremonies. Walk north instead: Conservatory Garden into North Woods is the calm route.
Scenic spots to time around this week
- Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, Belvedere Castle Terrace, Cop Cot, Ladies’ Pavilion, Wagner Cove all have celebrations sprinkled through the week, mostly midday. Sat May 16 is especially busy at these spots — visit Mon, Tue, Wed instead for solitude.
- Shakespeare Garden is mostly undisturbed all week — usual brief 4-minute maintenance window each morning around 11:06 AM. May 8 had two weddings; this week is calm.
Sat May 16 — Sacred Sites Open House
Sacred Sites Open House Day 1 at Mineral Springs, 10 AM–3 PM. Tours of the historic park structures — Mineral Springs Pavilion among them. Worth a stop if you’re curious about the park’s built history alongside its natural beauty.
What’s blooming
Tulips are passing peak; peonies and rhododendrons are coming in hot. The Conservatory Garden’s mid-month transition is spectacular. Dogwoods in the Ramble are at peak now and will be gone by next week.
