Central Park Week Ahead: May 3–9
Central Park Week Ahead: May 3–9
Hello,
Your weekly digest of what’s happening in Central Park. The week opens with one of the year’s biggest events and unfolds quietly from there — with a notable exception that runs all week long.
The headline events
Sun May 3 — TD Five Boro Bike Tour finish. 32,000 cyclists wrap up their 40-mile route at Center Drive and East Drive, 7 AM to noon. The lower park is closed to traffic and walking south of 72nd is messy until afternoon.
Mon May 4 through Sat May 9 — Julius Caesar at The Pool. Daily 10 AM–9 PM staging at The Pool Lawns (between 100th and 103rd, west side). The setup, the rehearsals, and the show itself unfold all week. This is the headline event for theater lovers and the most sustained activity in the park this week.
Sat May 9 — Skate Circle returns. Central Park Skate Circle activates Dead Road North, 2–7 PM. The traditional warm-weather signal that summer is arriving.
Daily rhythm worth tracking
- 5th Ave at 97th / Duke Ellington Circle, midnight–noon, every day: Frederick Law Olmsted Luncheon setup. A week-long footprint at one of the busiest park entrances.
- The Bandshell has performances Sun, Mon, Tue, and Fri — quiet midweek.
- Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Cop Cot, Ladies’ Pavilion, Bethesda Terrace all see small wedding ceremonies and celebrations throughout — typical for early May.
Closures and maintenance
- East 72nd Street Playground Lawns: closed Mon, Tue, Thu (5/4, 5/5, 5/7)
- Levin Playground: closed Thu, Fri (5/7, 5/8)
- East Meadow Picnic Zone: closed Sun 5/3 and Sat 5/9
- Shakespeare Garden: brief 4-minute maintenance window daily around 11:06 AM (negligible)
What’s notable about the week
The combination of Bike Tour finish on Sunday, Julius Caesar staging running all week at The Pool, and Skate Circle returning Saturday is essentially the park’s calendar declaring summer season open. By next week, the rhythm of warm-weather Central Park will be set.
