Central Park Nature Notes: Week of May 3–9
Central Park Nature Notes: Week of May 3–9
Hello nature lovers,
This is the week. Peak spring migration is on, the trees are leafing out, and most of the park’s quiet corners are wonderfully undisturbed by events. Here’s where to go and what to dodge.
Peak migration is now
Early May is the peak of warbler migration through Central Park. The Ramble and North Woods should be your destinations every morning this week. Get there early — first light is best — and bring binoculars. Reports of 15+ warbler species in a morning aren’t unusual right now.
Quiet spots, undisturbed all week
These places have nothing scheduled — perfect for slow walks and birding:
- Conservatory Garden (105th & 5th) — clear all week
- The Ramble — clear all week, prime birding
- Hallett Nature Sanctuary — clear all week
- North Woods & Ravine — clear all week
- Strawberry Fields — clear all week
Spots with scheduled events to time around
- Cherry Hill has small wedding/proposal gatherings most days, mostly midday. Visit in the morning or after 5 PM for the spring blooms in peace.
- Shakespeare Garden has two wedding ceremonies on Fri May 8 (10 AM–noon, then 6–7:30 PM). Other days are quiet — note there’s a ~4-minute maintenance window each morning around 11:06 AM that you can ignore.
- Harlem Meer has a small celebration today (5/3, 11 AM–noon) and a picnic Fri 5/8 (5–7 PM). Otherwise calm.
- Wagner Cove (lakeside, by Cherry Hill) has small wedding ceremonies most days. Beautiful but expect small gatherings.
What’s blooming right now
Cherry blossoms are giving way to dogwoods and crabapple. The Conservatory Garden’s tulip display peaks around now — worth a special trip. Lilacs around the Reservoir’s south end are about to pop.
