Central Park Family Plans: Week of May 3–9

Hi families,

Spring is rolling and the park has plenty going on for kids this week. Here’s a heads-up on what to plan for, what playgrounds are closed, and a few free things worth swinging by.

Today (Sun May 3)

Lots of birthday parties and picnics happening today, but nothing that closes a playground. A few things kids might enjoy:

• Copper Hills HS Dance Flash Mob at Bethesda Fountain Terrace, 12:15–1 PM — a quick fun stop
• Central Park International Folkdancers at King Jagiallo Plaza (around 76th/CPE), 11 AM–7 PM — costumes, live music
• Arise New York at the Bandshell, noon–6 PM — outdoor festival vibe

A heads-up: the TD Five Boro Bike Tour finish closes Center Drive and East Drive 7 AM to noon. If you’re walking south end with a stroller this morning, expect crowds and detours.

Playgrounds closed this week

Two playground areas are closed for maintenance — worth knowing before you trek over:

• East 72nd Street Playground Lawns: closed all day Mon 5/4, Tue 5/5, and Thu 5/7
• Levin Playground: closed all day Thu 5/7 and Fri 5/8

Other playgrounds (Heckscher, Diana Ross, Mariners’, Wild West, Ancient, Adventure, Heckscher) are open as usual.

Best family pick of the week — Sat May 9

• Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM. Kids love watching the little remote-controlled sailboats on Conservatory Water. Free, drop-in.
• Black Fae Day NYC at Heckscher Picnic Area, 1–5 PM — community gathering, great atmosphere
• Central Park Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM — fun to watch even if you’re not skating (older kids may want to bring blades)

Mother’s Day weekend (Sun May 10)

Just outside this week, but worth flagging:

• Bondd Pilates Mother’s Day Pop-up Class at the Great Lawn (Sat 5/9, 11 AM–1 PM) — for moms
• The park is generally peaceful Mother’s Day morning if you want a quiet picnic

Quick recap

Sun 5/3 morning — south end of park crowded Bike Tour finish. Avoid Center & East Drive til noon.

Mon 5/4–Fri 5/8 — two playgrounds closed East 72nd Lawns (M/T/Th), Levin (Th/F).

Sat 5/9 — best family day Model boats at Kerbs, Skate Circle at 72nd, picnics at Heckscher.
