TITLE

Marathon week in the park (Oct 26–Nov 1) — the blue line gets painted Wednesday morning, and it’s public

BODY

Weekly rundown, pulled from the NYC permit feed plus the Conservancy and Parks calendars. It’s marathon week, and the forecast has been absurdly kind: seven days with no rain at all, 75°F on Friday.

The thing most people don’t know about: Wednesday 9–10am, West Drive. The blue line gets painted — that stripe down the middle of the road that’s there all year and that nobody ever explains. It goes down in that one hour and the ceremony is open to whoever’s standing there. It’s in the permit record and not advertised anywhere else I can find.

Mon 26 and Tue 27 — 69°F then 60°F, sunny, and there is nothing booked in the park either day. Last genuinely empty days before the weekend takes over. If you want a long walk or ride with the place to yourself, it’s now.

Wed 28 — blue line, 9–10am, West Drive. 61°F and sunny.

Thu 29 / Fri 30 — Friday is 75°F, the warmest day since early October. The Conservancy’s Ramble woodland walk goes 10am from Belvedere Castle, which is the last one of the season and worth rearranging a morning for. Then the Marathon Opening Ceremony holds West Drive 4–7pm.

Sat 31 — Dash day, and Halloween

Odd thing worth mentioning: it’s Halloween and there is not a single Halloween event on the park’s permit calendar. No parade, no trick-or-treat, nothing. The Village parade takes that crowd and the park gets a road race instead. For a park that permits bench dedications and harp circles, an empty Halloween is strange.

Sun 1 — the marathon, 8am–5pm, 55,000 runners finishing in the park. Loop gone for nine hours.

Two practical notes. 69°F is warm for a marathon — if you’re running it, drink earlier than feels necessary. And if you want nothing to do with it: go north. The Ravine, the Loch and the North Woods are nowhere near the course and almost nobody thinks to go up there on marathon Sunday. It’s one of the quietest mornings of the year in that part of the park.

Still closed: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, as it has been since early September. The permits now run through November 25 — extended ten times now, roughly four weeks at a go, and still no stated reason anywhere in the public record.
