Plan your park day your way
No two visits are the same. Pick the path that fits you.
For runners
- 3-Mile Loop: Lower loop from Columbus Circle to Bethesda Terrace to back.
- 6-Mile Loop: Full park drive loop, the classic. Start anywhere, end where you like.
- Long Run (10+ miles): Add Harlem Hill repeats or extend into the East/West Drives for distance.
For families
- Carousel: A vintage favorite, open spring through fall near 65th Street.
- Playgrounds: Heckscher Playground (biggest in the park) and Ancient Playground (next to the Met).
- Picnic spots: Sheep Meadow (open space + skyline views), Great Hill (quiet lawns, uptown).
- Bonus: Rowboats at Loeb Boathouse are a family crowd-pleaser.
For first-time visitors
- Bow Bridge: The most photographed spot in the park -- classic views.
- Strawberry Fields: Tribute to John Lennon, with live musicians most days.
- The Mall & Literary Walk: Historic elm trees and statues of writers.
- Bethesda Terrace & Fountain: Iconic arches, tiled ceiling, and water views.
- Hidden gem: Conservatory Garden (formal gardens, seasonal blooms).
For dog lovers
- Off-Leash Hours: 6 AM-9 AM & 9 PM-1 AM on all lawns/wooded areas.
- Dog runs: Bull Moose Dog Run (west side, 81st St.) and Peter Detmold Dog Run (east side, 49th St.).
- Best strolls: The Ramble (wooded trails for adventurous pups) and Harlem Meer (calm waterside paths).
- Tip: Bring water! Fountains with dog basins are scattered but seasonal.
